advice on pines

Blytheville, AR(Zone 7a)

Could someone give me advice on which pines are best for planting on the west side of a yard for shielding from the afternoon sun? How about loblolly or white pine? Thanks, SheVerne

Shortleaf pine is most native to your area, but Loblolly pine would probably grow well there too.

My all time favorite is Longleaf pine, but I'm not sure how well it would perform in your area. It would probably do okay as long as you don't have heavy snow storms.

That shortleaf pine is really a pretty tree--Haven't ever heard of it before. I'll be checking it out. Thanks, SheVerne

The pine in the picture is a Longleaf pine, Shortleaf pine will have much shorter needles. The long needles on longleaf is why I say it might not do well if you get snow. Shorter needles won't hold as much snow, so it would be less likely to be damaged.

Oops, I mean that Longleaf pine is really a pretty tree.

Personally I hate Loblolly pines and I have some big ones. They self prune and make a mess and a possible safety issue when it's windy. I would say long leaf pine but if you get snow that's probably not a good idea.

If I was you I would go out and take some pictures of what pines you like growing in your area and someone here can probably ID it.

Those are about 30 year old loblolly on each side of the house. Notice no lower limbs, I didn't take those off they fall off. Sorry I didn't have a better picture but that should give you an idea what they look like.

Thanks Core, I believe I will ride around town and check out all the pines and take pictures of them. Fantastic shot of your house with the rainbow overhead. SheVerne
