Magnolia growth

I noticed 2 of these things growing on my Magnolia ~ what is it?

Wish I could have gotten a better pic but it was fairly high up in the tree.

It's a seed pod. It will turn brown and the red seeds exposed when it matures.

I had my eye on some sweetbay magnolias in the woods all summer, waiting to see the red berries but the birds beat me to 'em, I guess. This is all that's left, about an inch and a half long:

I'll try to watch it but we have lots of birds so it will probably be picked clean. Thanks for the info.

Moby, if it were Saucer Magnolia, I believe the seedpod will become sterile, since most of them are hybrids, I do believe.

Lily_love is correct, Saucer Magnolia is a hybrid (Magnolia x soulangeana) between Lily Magnolia (M. liliflora) and Yulan (A name I don't really get, since Yulan is just Mandarin Chinese for Magnolia, so it's like calling this Magnolia, "Magnolia Magnolia", just in 2 different languages! Or like Chai Tea, because Chai is just Hindu (a corruption of the Chinese word for "tea") for "tea" hence this Tea is "Tea Tea", just in 2 different languages. I'm gonna start a new beer and call it Cerveza Beer! I digress...) Magnolia (M. denudata). But the seeds are most often fertile and will germinate into new Magnolias if given proper treatment.

LOL Don't you just love redundancies?! My pet peave of the moment is "...but she usually always does that..." Well, which way is it?

I found the seed head had fallen off and turned a lovely shade of pink. Thanks for the info, Kman.
