H. Mulitflora

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

I am having the darndest time with this one. All my other ones (except H. blashernazie sp?) I looked like this for a while then it started growing new growth and looking alot better. Now I noticed that it's not looking good again. I'm not watering too much. When I noticed it looking bad the first time I think I was over watering it but now... How do you all grow it?

It looks OK in the new growth...but you might check your roots. Do you fertilize it?

Dawn,

I would guess that it's a watering problem. My multiflora (well, javanica) is the thirstiest of all my hoyas. I keep it constantly moist, but not soaking wet. It's sometimes hard to get the right balance. You may have been overwatering it before, and maybe you've taken it a tad too far and now you're underwatering it (?). Try and find a middle ground, and see if that makes a difference.

Hope that helps,
Gabi

I agree, lots of water, and also lots of light. I water mine thoroughly twice a week (don't let it sit in water though) and it sits on the top shelf in a window that gets a lot of direct morning and early-afternoon sun. It blooms all the time. Make sure your potting mix is loose though!

I agree with what Christine said. Lots of sun and water will hopefully be the answer. And loose potting mix is always key for me. I have mine sitting in a saucer, which I dump out when there's excess water in it, so that it doesn't sit in water. I see that your's is in a solo cup - there is nothing wrong with that, but multiflora seems to like lots of room (I find that it doesn't need to be potbound, like most hoyas).

Mine wasn't that big when I first got it in March of this year, and then when I increased the pot size it just took off. It sits right next to a big balcony sliding door, and gets eastern exposure (morning sun).

Here's a pic of it when I first got it in March 2007 (it was a little over a foot tall):

And here is the same plant about 4 months later (July 2007) - you can see that it is now on the floor, and the hoya in the brown pot is where the multiflora (javanica) once was able to fit!

And here is a picture I took of it today, 3 months after the last picture was taken. It's now about 4 feet tall.

Gabi:that is one gorgeous plant and makes me want another one. I need to stop visiting this hoya forum. Thanks for sharing. :)

Makes me want to take mine out of the hanging basket and put it on a trellis. Looks GREAT there Gabi.

Thanks guys :)

Yeah, I have an EA one that's in a hanging basket and I favor the upright one (in the pic) to the basket. I use those green bamboo stakes to hold up each of the 3 branches, and I just had to switch over to the tallest bamboo stakes they make! A tomato cage (or 2) would work also, but I like how the stakes make it look like each branch is free-standing.
Marcy, I'd love to see pics if you decide to trellis your multiflora!

Thanks a lot everyone for the info. I think I will take it out of the cup and repot it. I just moved it so it gets more sun. I've kinda quit fertilizing for the fall, Should I keep fertilizing?

p.s.
Yours is gorgeous Gabro14!

I slow fertilizing down around now, but don't stop completely until early November. They definitely need a rest period in the colder climates (i.e., less sun in winter). And I see your zone is even warmer than mine, so if I was you I'd keep it up for a few weeks yet. But very, very dilute.

Christine
