llilyfan, Iowaron & I will be there most of the day to talk about lilies and sell bulbs. (Moby& Dave can't come this time.)
Fall IS the best time to get those lilies into the ground. Bring your garden photos! We'd love to see DGers.
Iowa Lily Society Fall Bulb Sale
Iowa is a bit far for me but I hope you have a great day and make lots of$$$$$$$$$$$$
Gloria
This will be the first sale I've missed in quite a while. Miss Elli, our DGD and her parents have moved to the far side of the state. They will be in town then so we're having a big birthday party here.
Ratz, I'd love to go, but I'm helping one of my best friends move that weekend. She has to be out of her present house by Oct. 23rd.. We'll see....
Do you sell memberships while you're there? All my fall work is done, and I'm getting bored just watching the asters and mums bloom.
Hmmmm.....
Yes, you can become a member there. :)
Moby, if you aren't going, who will courier my bulbs? Don't you know you're supposed to make your plan according to what works best for ME? LOL
Have fun at the birthday party. How old?
All my fall work is done
GASP!
Send your Genie in the bottle up to me, please.
LOL! I'm hoping in a few years everything will be so established that getting done won't be possible. This is only the second year after starting with not so much as a tree. Each year more new beds and new plants. In the meantime, I hate it when I get everything done.
Come one over, I'll keep you busy.
I'm probably not done. I probably have forgotten something vitally important.
Done? Done? I was the "mud lady" yesterday as I moved all the lilies that I had marked in bloom as : too short, too much sun, too much shade, mixed colors etc. And I dug all the summer "no shows" to see if anything was left--- I also planted $178 worth of martagons, trumpets & species lilies that I ordered with Linda_IA. Whew! Raining today, so I get to get my base caught up on where everything is....
Making room for Buggycrazy & Lily Society bulbs .
Too muddy here. I can't bear the thought of having to water the bulbs in with more rain on the way.
It rained 3 inches yesterday steady from 5 am to noon. Lots of muddy dogprints on the kitchen floor.
So, how did the sale go? Pick up anything really neat that I can't live without? :) I really thought about making the trek down, but since I had refrigerator full of lily bulbs to plant, I figured I best stay home on such a beautiful day and do that..
LOL I understand the feeling.
This was our first year for pre-orders, so I already had a nice order in. I picked my order plus added a couple of martagon crosses, Sarabande OT and Ortega OT. We had a flurry of activity between 9 am & 10:30 am. We sold out at 11:30 am. Guess we didn't order enough lily bulbs?
I spent yesterday riding around in Wisconsin & NE Iowa. buckets of bulbs waiting in the garage. I hope the rain holds off until after dark today so I can get most of them into the ground.
The Fall sale sold out?? Awesome!
Saturday I planted all the lilies I had, plus three hosta and a few other odd ball stuff. Yesterday, I helped move a friend. We rearranged her living room three different times (no, she wasn't part of that) and we finally ended up with some good funky Feng Shui going on. :) Couches can be really heavy, ya know..
I missed the sale because I am in CA with the ugly fires. Will be home tomorrow to finish planting my lilies. Maybe next year.
Arlene, you and yours ok? Please stay safe!
Hope she is. Our friends just bought a house 6 weeks ago and are near a e-vac boundary, eek!
Oh wow, that's the pits..
Sad.
The fires started by someone came within 2 miles of my daughter's house; but it is contained and they are ok.
At my meadowbrook house just lots of wind and a mess in the pool. I turned off the pool and my pool guy willl come over and clean it out; it is clogged with debris.
My daughter in San Diego is far away from the fires.
But the air was terrible. 85 degrees this morning and a burning smell.
We are ok.
Glad to hear you and yours are safe. :)
It seems to draw a lot of media attention but people bring this on themselves by trying to build houses and live too close to these areas.
Years ago after the Yellowstone fires we read an article that explained it was natural for a fire to occur periodically to burn all that underbrush - part of the eco ? system. By putting the smaller fires out we interfere and then a really big one occurs. Even read that they try doing controlled burning.
The people in Malibu go through the flooding and mudslides as well as fires . . . when interviewed they say they are willing to live there in spite of all that. They love that ocean view. If that happened to me ONCE, I'd be outa there.
Hmmmm, Flood, fire, earthquakes, wonder how bad the insurance premiums are.
My niece lives between San Francisco and LA and she told me she has a 30,000.00 deductable on her earthquake insurance... Yikes..
It is being speculated that fire insurance will go up for all of us, even if we have very little chance of fire. Seems unfair but we don't have any choice in the matter.
Earthquake insurance:
http://www.earthquakeauthority.com/
Before the Northridge Earthquake in 1994 our deductible was 10% of the value of the structures. The earthquake authority went broke on that one.
In 2002 and 2003 we paid $497.00
2007 was $392
They are now saying they have 7 Billion capacity for claims.
But with earthquake insurance they use rating factors such as how close to a fault your home is. My house is not near a fault so maybe that is the reason for the price. But now the deductible is 15% of the value of the structures. If my home were leveled by and earthquake I could much more easily come up with that amount than the cost of re-building the whole place.
:( sorry - don't know what this has to do with lilies
So, Wanda, did you take any pictures of you guys at the sale?
":( sorry - don't know what this has to do with lilies"
How well do lilies tolerate earthquakes and fires? ;*)
Nope. We sold out of lilies so fast that we shut down & went to lunch! LOL
