Spectacular 2007 CG Seed Swap HAVES & WANTS

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

This is the start of the new thread. I suppose there might be a person or two who wants to join, and the rule was you have to have posted in the CG forum sometime prior to October 1, 2007.

Here is a gigantic Black Eyed Susan I grow, Rudbeckia hirta. I don't know if it is an annual or a perennial, but it is a good garden flower and a good cut flower. The seeds are a pain to clean and will contain chaff (the chaff is the same size as the seed).

I can't find the file on my computer & I have to pick up my mom now, but here's the link.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3989704

If you want it, put "Suzy's Gigantic Black Eyed Susan" on your wishlist.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Here is a copy/paste of my "haves" from the other thread.

I think Critter has most of the ornamental peppers covered, but I do have some Medusa and some Philius Blue if anyone would be interested. I also have tons of the Purple Amaranth and Rose Queen Cleome. I have 2 differenf Nicotianas, the Perfume Mix and the tall white Peace Pipe. I have Painted Tongue and 2 different Speedwells (Royal Blue and Red Fox). If Critter's Purple Knockout Salvia is not ready I have already harvested a few of those seeds and I also have some Orange Profussion zinnia to offer as well as the Purple Prince. Oh, and I just finished cleaning some Lemon Balm. And I almost forgot the seed I have from the lavender poppy. I'm afraid I don't know anything about it though as it was a freebie with an Ebay purchase.

Edited to add that I am still working with the red speedwell. To ensure that everyone who has requested some gets at least a few seeds, the packs will only contain 30-40 seeds (and an equal amount of chaff, LOL)

Reserving seed packs for:

Grampapa:
Speedwell Red Fox
Speedwell Royal Blue
Zinnia 'Profusion Orange'
Zinnia ‘Purple Prince’
Painted Tongue

soulgardenlove:
Nicotiana Perfume Mix (which BTW mine is much shorter than plantfiles says they should be)

pamsue:
Speedwell Red Fox
Medusa Pepper

Critter:
Medusa
Philius Blue ?
Zinnia Purple Prince

rachierabbit:
Zinnia 'Profusion Orange'
Zinnia ‘Purple Prince’

seandor:
Zinnia 'Profusion Orange'
Zinnia ‘Purple Prince’

If I've missed anybody just send me a DMail. I should have plenty of most things and I want to make sure that everybody who wants something gets it. (We need the Medusa to hurry up though!)

Lists of specific wants (depending on availability):
Critter's Basils, not-chocolate-daisy-daisies, sweet pickle peppers, wishbone flower
Suzy's Coral Daliahs
Weezingreen's great bellflower
Budbloom's Grey-headed coneflower
Pamsue's coral somniferum poppy
Garden Gus's balsam & Lychins
Rachierabbit's Foxglove & Black & Blue salvia
Grampapa's fennel, basil, jupiter's beard, grape poppy & Ruby Giant Coneflower
Soulgardenlove's Joe Pye Weed
Seandor's columbine
Who had the coral nymph salvia?

General wants (depending on availability):
anything in the salmon / coral colors
anything pink, blue or burgandy
any solid colored hollyhocks
any single colored daliah or zinnia (not orange or purple on the zins)
any agastache
any verbenas
any phlox
any herbs other than oregano and lemon balm (all of those basils and the garlic chives sound WONDERFUL)
anything that grows well in deep shade

GGus, I'd like to try the Cannas.

You're in Kansas, so our growing season would be similar, how do you start Cannas from seed? Do they bloom the first year from seed? Or do you dig the tubers, store them over winter, and then they bloom the second year? I've never grown them.

I think your Verbena is Verbena bonariensis -- is it tall with a purple cluster at the top?

Soulgardenlove, Great list :)

Pagancat, you have seeds afterall!

Gram, I need that Shasta daisy Highland White Dream!

I am having some severe trouble getting the seed extricated from the chaff on some of mine. The 6 different sieves I have aren't working. The winnowing I'm doing outside isn't working. I finally decided to count out 5 seed-seeds and then send a bunch of chaff, too. That way you can see what the seeds look like. My fingertips are worn to the bone! Hahaha.

Suzy

Suzy

Suzy

Suzy~ cannas from seed will bloom the first year. In late winter, nick the canna seeds, (holding it with tweezers) soak in hot water for 24 hours to facilitate germinating, then plant indoors in good prewatered ( I use weak chamomile tea in the water to lessen damping off) potting soil at least 4-6 inches deep, near a sunny window. Cover the pot with a freezer baggie and they will germinate. Check every 2-3 weeks or so to ensure that soil is damp, spray mist soil only till damp as needed) When the Spring temperatures are stable in the 70's plant out in desired locations. Before weather turns hot, scratch some magnesium or epsom salt into the soil to prevent leaf edges from burning. Here's a baby canna less than 2 months planted outside using the method above. I'm sure there are other methods, with 4 pumpkins, this is less work and works well for me.

DO NOT SEND --

Chinese Garlic Chives
Papaver somniferum or P. somn. var paeoniflorum, including Lauren's Grape poppy or Queen Poppy - other types of poppy do fine for me, but unfortunately not these
Salvia farinacea (Mealy Cup Sage) - it'll bloom for me, but in a pouty way

I have about 25% sun, 50% part shade and 25% horrible, tree-rooty dry shade which, ironically, may be the tidiest and most attractive part of the garden - lol - perhaps because I don't stuff it with every root, seed & cutting that catches my imagination.

I'll go back to thread #4 and talk about how I outwit shade with some sunlovers in my garden from here.

Oh my goodness!! Thanks so much! :)

You're welcome - between us all, seems like we're making quite a collosal gift horse out of ourselves - lol

I'm sure it will be like Christmas for a gardener when those packages come back!! :)
