wrote: Suzy~ cannas from seed will bloom the first year. In late winter, nick the canna seeds, (holding it with tweezers) soak in hot water for 24 hours to facilitate germinating, then plant indoors in good prewatered ( I use weak chamomile tea in the water to lessen damping off) potting soil at least 4-6 inches deep, near a sunny window. Cover the pot with a freezer baggie and they will germinate. Check every 2-3 weeks or so to ensure that soil is damp, spray mist soil only till damp as needed) When the Spring temperatures are stable in the 70's plant out in desired locations. Before weather turns hot, scratch some magnesium or epsom salt into the soil to prevent leaf edges from burning. Here's a baby canna less than 2 months planted outside using the method above. I'm sure there are other methods, with 4 pumpkins, this is less work and works well for me. |
