Need advice on my avocado pair

Zephyrhills, FL

I have grown two avocado trees from seed. I obtained the seeds from the grocery store. The fruits were sold as Hass Avocado.

I now have two trees that have grown right next to each other. One tree is 5 foot and the other is about 4 foot tall.

I am wondering if I messed up! I braided the trees around each other because I thought that they would grow together and pollinate each other. The braid would be aesthetically pleasing.

What I want to know is, should I cut out one of the trees and let one grow on its own? One tree is doing much better than the other, and now is the time that I can probably cut one and get away with it. Any longer, and I'm in for the long haul.

What is your opinion?

Thank you!

I don't think braiding is good in the long term for a tree like an avocado, when they get tall I think the trunk will tend to be weaker because of the braiding and it might impact how water travels up the trunk to the leaves. If you want something with a braided trunk, do it with something that stays smaller (I've seen hibiscus and ficus done this way).

So.. survey says? Cut it out!? Okeydokey....any objections?

If you leave them braided, they're going to fuse into one trunk anyhow, so why not just wait and see what happens?

Just an update: We had a bad freeze this winter, got down to 22 F. and these guys died back all the way to the ground. New sprouts are growing in, but I think that they will just die again next year when the frosts come again, so I am thinking of giving it up. I will probably wait and see what happens anyways though.

What zone are you in? If you're in zone 9b then once they get bigger they should be hardy, but you may need to protect them on cold nights for a few years. 9a is a little more borderline, and zone 8 I think you're better off putting them in a pot and bringing them in for the winter.
