We need some advice regarding pruning our hedge around the house. The hedge is a Texas Privet, 25 years old and 8+ high I trim it to 7 ½ every other year. Its about 6 thick. It goes all around the yard and is 228 in length in total. My wife wants to prune it to stimulate new growth. (1) What kind of pruning would you recommend? (2) What time of year should we have it done (or not done)? [Notice the old BBQ to the right to gage the height of the hedge]
Pruning Texas Privet Hedge
My privet can be cut in half If I want and it comes back like there is no tomorrow. I have trouble keeping it under 6 ft and it is a wall now. Nothing can get through it. Time of year you cut it back doesn't seem to matter, we have gotten a bunch of rain lately and my privet is growing 3 ft branches off of it right now. LOL.
If I was you I would wait till maybe Jan. or feb. and just prune a couple of feet off the top and a foot off of each side. By next fall you'll have a nice thick hedge.

You can cut it all the way to the ground and it will come back.
