I have this cat. A very large black Persian cat. Her name is Saphra. She likes to bring me things. All sorts of things. Little dead mice, grasshoppers, crickets, dessicated bird parts, all sorts of "goodies" that she thinks that I will like. She will bring them to my patio door to my bedroom and drop them off for me. She also talks to me. No, I'm not going bonkers! She does talk to me. She tells me of her daily exploits out in the yard when I come home from work. But when she brings me a "gift", her way of talking changes. It's more urgent. More of a "Come here daddy!!! Look what I found!!! Hurry!!! Hurry!! I guess you can tell where this is going? :D
Sooooooo.....Late last night while I was in my room watching TV, I heard her. I knew she had brought me another treasure to behold. But this time something was different. Her tone of voice was much more urgent. To the point of being hysterical. So I jumped up to see what was going on. I opened the door and there she sat with a little gray lump laying in the grass in front of her. She immediately started telling me ALL about it. All tho, in her hysteria, I couldn't understand her. I reached down to pick it up, expecting it to be some poor rodent that had given up the ghost. But to my surprise, it was this little gray and yellow bird. And it was still alive!! I immediately whisked it away to safety while Saphra was still babbling about the "how and why" of it all.
Here are several pics. I would like to know more about it, but don't know where to look. So, I thought I would start here.
A present from my cat!
Not ignoring you Dr, just starting to look around.
What part of Texas is your town in NE,NW south etc?
I hope some others come in soon because this one is really hard for me.
Possibly, Female Scarlet Tanager?
Heres a page on them check out the females pic.

Check out Yellow Warbler

Lovely story drsaul, I'm pleased you managed to rescue this one!
BTW, Love the way you talk about your cat talking so much. I've had cats around all my life and just love them!
How is the bird? Where you able to take her to a wildlife rehabilatation place?
More pics of Yellow Warbler, note the Latin name was spelled incorrectly.

I found a good one here,
http://www.geometer.org/gal01/misc/index.html
It does look very similar!
LOL, now you know why I don't like doing warblers. Their too confusing for me.
I've seen pics of 3 different birds that look like drsauls. :-)
I'd guess Wilson's or maybe Hooded Warbler.
I enlarged the pic of the Female Scarlet Tanager, the beak is much broader and the wrong colour.
Which was the 3rd one?
Wilson's Warbler for me too.
Resin
Wilson's Warbler.

Hooded Warbler, a pic at the bottom looks close, we know it's a Warbler anyway!

Hi claypa!
Theres no eye ring on the hooded or wilsons warbler/
These pics of a first winter hooded warbler do look similar, but the beak is a little different, being broader and lighter in colour. I couldn't say about a ring around the eye, but you will know better than me pelle.
http://www.charliesbirdblog.com/~charlie/SFOsproutfield/hooded.html
The first pic drsaul posted shows a white eye ring.
I wish we had a better pic of any wing bars.
Pelle, what's a drsaul?
Whoops, I see now.
ROTFLOL!! Hi Dave, Join the confusion!
It does look like it has a hood of sorts, good grief I need to walk away from this one.
A drsaul is a special person that receives "gifts" from his talking cat!! :D
I will try to get a better pic tonight.
The bird is here in my room in an empty aquarium I have set up for it. I don't have a bird cage at the moment.
Don't quit now...you got this newbie all worked up.
Is she eating drsaul?
Some info on the differences between Wilson's and Hooded Warbler females,
http://www.texasbirding.net/birds/hooded.htm
"Male Hooded Warblers are unmistakable. The black hood completely encircles the yellow face. The female is very similar to a female Wilson's Warbler. Female (and juvenile) Hooded Warblers have white tail corners that are lacking in the Wilson's Warbler. The female's face may be sharply defined and the forehead darker than the female Wilson's.
Hooded Warbler's breed in the woods of east Texas, Wilson's do not. Summer Warblers are most likely Hooded Warblers"

Hi dr!
Hey drsaul, How about taking a pic of the special kitty while your at it.
I would love to see Saphra.
I have a Brown tabby Persian.
I see Wilson's warbler sightings listed on one of those links, but no Hooded warblers. Wilson's is a migrant throughout most of the US, a lot more likely to be seen in the Texas panhandle. My books don't list Hooded as rare in that part of Texas, it doesn't show them there at all.
Unless the cat decides to make a present of some tail feathers with spots, I don't see what else this bird could be.
"Is she eating drsaul?"
I'm not sure. She's just sitting in the food dish at the moment. When I 1st put her in there last night, she pecked at it. I also put a small bowl of water in there also. I hope she is eating and I'm just not seeing it. I don't want to loose her. While I was taking pics of her I noticed that she was missing her tail feathers and some of her wing feathers on one side. She got away from me and flew just short distances here in the room. Boy, she's fast!!! She even tried to bite me!!! LOL! She's a little camera shy! ;P
As for Saphra, I went out and had a little talk with her and asked what pet store she purchased my "Gift" from, but got no discernible response. Just one of those looks.
I will get a pic of her tonight also. My camera batteries are being charged as I type.
Thanks for the quick response and all the links that everyone has provided. I haven't had a chance to check them all out, but I will do so after dinner.
drsaul, Please read this page.

Heres a link to find a Wildlife Rehabber
http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/
Heres one for Texas !
http://www.southeasternoutdoors.com/wildlife/rehabilitators/texas-rehabilitators.html
I wish there were something like that around here. Hereford is a small town and we don't have anything in the way of rehab. I just checked on her and she's not doing well. She's no longer perching. She's laying flat on her belly with her feet curled up under her. She acts like she getting weak. I really don't expect her to last the night. I really hate this. She's a beautiful bird, but that's what cats do I guess. She also could have something wrong with her insides that we can't see.
I went out to find Saphra to get a pic, but couldn't find her. I really hope she's not out "shopping" for me again!!
Me too.
Oh this is so sad. :-(((
I know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish I could do more.
We use to raise birds a long time ago, parrots and such. Nothing like this small thing. She just seems so fragile.
What you can do is keep the cat indoors.

I found a site about rearing birds, it gives the food the different types can eat. I wonder if it could be fed with placing food in it's beak, worth a try?
http://wildlife1.wildlifeinformation.org/S/00Man/AvianHusbandryTechniques/UKBHusbIndTech/HR_Av_Passerines.htm
So sorry, it doesn't look good..
Well all you can do is try your best as you have and then hope for the best/
Maybe it would be a good idea to at least try and get the phone # of the closest rehabber so they could give you their best advice if this happens again.
Sorry its ending so badly. Pelle
So sad!!
I believe what you had there was a young male Wilson's Warbler...drsaul.
Pretty sure of it. They are migrating through right now. See the dark cap and greyish wings.
Here are a few of the pics I have take the last 2 years>
This male in Sept 2006>
