My neighbor Liz, brought this catepillar(???) over and we are wanting to know what it is. She found three of them on her Japanese Maple tree. He is HUGE and UGLY.... He was three or four inches long and fat. They hadn't never seen anything like him either. Can you help tell us what he is and what he does????

I believe it's an Imperial Moth cat, they can be tan, green or a reddish color:

He'll pupate soon and become a pretty moth.
