Tasha Tudor

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Maybe this has been spoken about in previous threads, but if not, maybe some "newbies" will be interested in this incredible woman.

I don't even know if she is still living, but someone gave me a book called Tasha Tudor's Garden. It is a GREAT book to read and has incredible photography of her and her gardens.

She's really quite fascinating to read about, and her gardens are (what I consider to be) the epitome of Cottage Gardening...(maybe that's the wrong term for her "look" , I'm not certain...)

Is anyone else "into" Tasha Tudor ?

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

i am not so much into her....but i own a book; she had corgis and i do too.....:)

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

yes...her corgi's are the bomb !

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

what is it that you like about her?

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Jasper, I went to Amazon and looked up the book. I used their feature to look "inside" the book, VERY NICE!! Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Another book is not on my list right now but Christmas is coming!

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

psych there are several books by her...which one did you get? do you have corgis?

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

I just looked at the books on Amazon, I couldnt afford to part with any money right now. No corgis although I am familiar with them.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

sticks...I just think she's very "unique" and has way cool gardens. I never knew about her until I read the book...actually, I'm still reading it.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

well(ahem)....i just may need to go back and view her gardens....when i got the book i just got it cause of the beautiful cover of her and a corgi....i wasn't really into gardening then....i will have to go back and see what she gardens...:)

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Oh STICKS!!! YES go back and reread it silly girl! And the beautiful gardens pictues went right over your head back then... oh my... oh my... *sigh*

Jacumba, CA(Zone 8b)

Yes, she is still alive at 91! I first saw her in a magazine and then on a gardening show and fell in love with her, she's quite a character. She reminds me of my great aunt. i bought her video after seeing her on tv and it is cute. She does have quite a garden or at least she did a few years ago.

Here's an idea: I think she should host a DG Round Up at her acreage ! (Yeah, right...!)

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Ok Jasper, YOU ask her!!! *snicker*

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I took a look inside one of the books on amazon and must say that I love what I saw. I'll keep my eyes peeled for her. Thanks for posting this! I love that classic CG style.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

She gardens barefoot ! Don't know if I could go that far...especially with goose poop around !

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I know her as an ILLUSTRATOR of children's books! I didn't know she had a garden too!!! Becky's Christmas is one I remember. Gosh, I forgot about those books for my own kids!

Jacumba, CA(Zone 8b)

I bet she could teach us all alot about gardening, and about life. She said she has never been on vacation because her whole life has been a vacation. I bought a couple of her books for my grandkids. She has a website, just google her name.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Becky's Birthday and Becky's Christmas. I grew up with them.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

I have her "Forever Christmas" book. My Aunt and Uncle gave it to me a few years ago. Love it. She is a character :0) I have also read several articles about her and her gardens.

She makes Martha Stewart look contrived !

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

Jasper, I don't think THAT would be hard to do!!! LOL

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Stop interrupting me, psychw2...I'm busy unloading sand I had flown in from Cairo for my iris'...(per Martha's suggestion of course)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

No way! Did she really recommend doing that??? LOLOLOL I must order a case of Cairo's finest straight away.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Too late...it's all gone now. I got the last 2 cu. yds. after she had the Sphinx moved to Conn. to make room for a K Mart.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

What's that you say? Sorry, but I can't get a clear look at my monitor to read your posts because I'm too busy building a Fancy Frock out of a fitted bedsheet (Queen sized) that I just picked up at The Mart.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

That sounds like a good thing to wear when you are doing a mosaic on the bottom of your pool using your old cut up credit cards.

I almost fell over today, the subject of Oprah's show was about infertility. Guess what she had Martha's daugher as a guest, WOW, this woman decided that she want's to be a mom so she has been spending $28,000.00 a month to get pregnant, yes you read it correctly twenty-eight thousand dollars a month! I couldn't believe it! She has been doing this for almost two years. There are so many things wrong with this picture, where do I begin! It's not like she's spending the $$ on expensive sperm she said she has no idea who the donor(s) are. Does the woman not realize that ADOPTION costs approximately $20,000.00 for the whole process! With the amount of money she has spent she could have adopted 14 kids by now and there are so many kids that need good homes!

I'll get off my soapbox now. It just infuriated me. Good thing her mom has lot's of money to help her out!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Dang - I was IN Cairo 25 years ago. I did bring home a few souvenirs, but DOH! I never thought of the sand, and how useful it could be later in life!

Wrightie is that a queen sized Fancy Frock? Or from a queen sized sheet? lol

My exposure to TT was thru an article in a Herb Companion. Interesting character with lots of knowledge and enjoyment of life.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Both, Podster. Both. I can barely keep up with my expanding waistline...

Rachie, how could she possibly risk adoption? (1) she might get a Dud, and (2) then she'd never get to see what the fruit of her loins would bare. [tongue-in-cheek! I'm childless by choice, but if I ever feel the "pull," we will adopt. You can crate train adopted children, right?]

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Okay, back to the subject at hand... I'm fascinated by this woman and am going to order one of her gardening related books. From what I can tell, "Tasha Tudor's Garden" is the one to get.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

wrightie...that's the only book of hers I've seen...and it IS a good read...with many good pictures.

Love her books. Got her gardening book from the Library. Wonderful.

Here's her family's website. You can take tours of their gardens. Fun!

This must be karma.

I've been a lurker on this forum for years. I was just trying to remember the name of the author Tasha Tudor. I had borrowed her book from the library years ago, and really wanted to see it again. There is a crab apple mentioned that I wanted to try to find.

So, I came to this forum, hoping to find the name of the author, and voila, there it was.

Thanks, JaperDale!

By the way, if anyone is looking to get a copy, Alibris has them reasonably priced.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Before "Cottage Gardens" became the "thing", we always called them "old lady gardens"...because it seemed it was always little old ladies who had achieved that look, but they didn't seem to get the recognition for it that it warranted.
