CLOSED: Does anyone know what is living in here?

I've seen this on branches and I know they are insect eggs. But what kind?

There are Gall Flies, similar to Fruit Flies, which lay their eggs in galls on certain trees or shrubs. I couldn't say for certain that is what it is, if you know what the tree is that might help.

I believe it is cherry but I can't go back and check until the middle of this month. I did see some that looked the same on my Chaenomeles.

I found a gall makers list of all things!

There are other things which cause galls, bacteria and fungus.

That black knot fungus wallaby mentioned is so common, it's practically an ID characteristic for Prunus trees. That's what I'd guess it is.

I can't get your image to enlarge but it looks exactly like tent caterpillar egg cases. They lay hundreds of eggs in shiny black cases that are hard but can be rubbed off with your fingers. Wild or choke cherry is one of their favorite plants. I do not believe these to be galls at all. I control mine by rubbing them off. You can also use a dormant oil spray in the fall.

It was tent caterpillar eggs. Thank you for the gall lists. It is very helpful with id's for all my pictures.
