Brenda,

Whatever you do, don't let the Kohleria rhizomes go dry. Time for sprouting can vary, just like AV leaves vary depending on the plant, the age of the leaf, the time of year, the temp etc.

The baggie method is definitely an option and a lot of people prefer it because you can see the rhizomes. I tend to forget about them and let them dry out, so .... I usually just plant rhizomes in a pot and water them with everything else. Full rhizomes about half inch deep, and small flakes/pieces of rhizomes go nearer the surface. I sometimes bag the flakes of rhizomes (treat like seeds).

happy propping :-)

thanks, Keyring..................wish you didn't work so hard and couple play on here with your wisdom and knowledge of plants more often...........

Someday I might try a Kohleria again. A couple of months back Jannich sent me a K. 'Dark Walnut' rhizome .... it didn't survive. I planted it up in the little jar she sent me but nothing ever came of it ... I got curious and went to dig it up and it was gone. I'm assuming it just disintegrated or something. The soil was not wet, so I know it didn't rot. I'm thinking maybe I planted the little bitty thing too deep.

I joined the Gesneriad Society and they give so many vendors web sites of all kinds of rhizomes............if i can't find them at these upcoming sales, I am going to start ordering from some of them..........

(Zone 1)

I joined the Gesneriad Society recently too Gail. I tried joining in on one of the forums and found out I had to register and be approved to chat on the forums! I still haven't gotten permission yet ... waiting on an e-mail of approval. I have checked out some of the vendors they list for Gessie's.

Lin, I didn't get my approval for the forum for a while either, so I emailed them and asked about it. The fellow replied pretty quickly and said they get a lot of spam email everyday and sometimes a true registration gets accidentally overlooked in all the mess. Email them with the title "Forum registration" or something similar, and I bet you'll be up and running in no time! :o)

(Zone 1)

Gail: I got the same e-mail from him, worded just like that. I can get into the website and the members only area, just can't participate in any forum yet.

He approved my registration for the forums, right away. Did you email him from the contact us link on the actual forum page?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't even know what site you all are discussing.....................is that is posting site for gesneriads only??????????

(Zone 1)

I need to e-mail him again. I am having trouble registering for the forums. I put in my username and e-mail address and password and it won't accept it. I will contact the forum admin guy again and he can activate it. Just read his last email and he said he will do it quickly. Not that I will be participating in the forums much but just out of curiosity I wanted to see them.

Keyring thank you very much for answering about the rhizomes! I had planted a couple that disappeared as Lin's did and I think I had them too deep but these I want to live! :0) I'm going to try some flakes of them because that interests me and then maybe plant a piece or two also. The rest are going out in a trade so they need to stay healthy until then!

Gail over at the Gessie Society web page they have a forum or chat room type place where you can participate or ask questions....... but evidently you have to jump through a few hoops to get involved in it.....

Thanks for the info, Brenda................may wait a while to try it................there are enough hoops to jump through about everything else in my life (LOL)
