Gail: This is a good thread for new photo's. I think Begoniadude's thread was just looking for ID's for his plants?

I am excited that Snow sent you one of these..........i have to get brave enough to start cutting on mine............(boo hoo)

(Zone 1)

I got Spring Kiss from Bluebird's early this year and Irish Kiss came from a lady in my local AV club.

Here's my favorite Semi Mini Purple that you gave me Gail. I think I just posted a pic of this one a few days ago, but it is full of blooms now:

You know what......................love that plant and next spring I am going to ask for a leaf or two.............mine that has the double purple bloom is a different plant..............not as pretty and big as yours.................mine acts like a true mini...........yours is fabulous as a semi mini....................wow..........you have done great with her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lin.............you are really rocking and rolling with your plants.............congrats

Do either of you grow Alsobia? If so, are they easy/hard? Are Chirita's easy/hard?
I consider AV's hard so they would have to be easier and require less light. That is why I decided (with the help of Gail) to start with Streptocarpus :)

You girls are just the BEST! I am SO happy to have found you. Love ya lots!

My Alsobia Cygnet just bloomed for the first time.......................I had given up on her............she was sent to me last February from Allison who is no longer on DG............take a look............i stuck her out on the front porch, looked her straight in the eyes and told her she was getting some fertilizer and then she could either die or bloom.............less than 10 days later she started to bloom........

I have an Alsobia 'Cygnet' from Allison too. It was not growing at all ... someone said to put it outside which I did and it bloomed and began to growing a little too. Then, it kinda got hidden behind something else out on the deck and didn't get watered. I found it yesterday when I took all the orchids down to feed them. I am going to baby it so maybe it will perk up. I have a basket of Alsobia 'dianthiflora' that was looking soooo pretty a few weeks ago. it got left out in the rain and now looks pretty sad too. I think I read recently that Alsobia's like and can handle cooler temperature's too, so maybe I should move them back into the air conditioned house. Our temp's have been hovering at 89-90 degrees for quite a few weeks and the humidity is still horrible! I might move them inside tomorrow and see what happens.

Now, don't get me started on Chirita's .... I LOVE them. I have found them very easy and have a few:

C. 'Aiko' (Have 2 of these and a leaf with baby)
C. 'Betty'
C. 'Crossroads'
C. 'Diane Marie' (not doing well)
C. 'Kazu'
C. 'Kitaguni'
C. 'Linearifolia'
C. 'Little Dragon'
C. 'Periwinkle'
C. 'Silver Surfer'
C. 'Sinensis Hisako'
C. 'Stardust'
C. 'Vietnam'

I think my D. Marie started failing when I repotted it with a wick and put it on a reservoir. I think it's getting too wet. I need to repot a couple of things with more perlite in the mix!

There are so many more out there that I would like to add to my Chirita collection but am waiting until Spring to buy any more plants!

I think the Chirita's and Episcia's are ending up being my very favorites of the Gessie family! Maybe it's because I am so new to them. I have a feeling I might have a few more favorites in the next year or two. I have one Petrocosmea that I am really liking the looks of and next year may get a couple more of them. Gee, I may end up in a few years having as many Gessie's as I do common generic houseplants!

Oh, Nancy, your collage of blossoms is sooo pretty! I love that Collage thing! One of these days I'm gonna download the software and learn how to do that!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Lin you would love making collages I am sure!.., You know..It never ceases to amaze me how plants some people find so easy to grow..I can't grow to save me! LOL Like Chiritas for instance! For me they just sit taking up space without blooming.I have seen pics of some of yours in bloom and they are so gorgeous! Please!! tell me what secret you use to grow them so well?

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Gail looks like the talk you had with your Alsobia Cygnet paid off.Love that bloom! I know after I finally set mine outside this summer it really took off and bloomed so nice with alot of new growth.I kind of hate to think of bringing it back inside for the winter for fear it will go downhill again.

cedarnest your collage is just beautiful and I have now added the Concord Chimera and Rob's Whatever chimera to my want list, they are just beautiful!!

Lin your Irish Kiss is another I'd love to have some day! And Gail that Harmony's Little Stinker is always great to see!

The prettiest AV I have blooming right now is Thunder Surprise and it is just full of blossoms!! My camera doesn't do the colors justice on it.....

Now I have a question I hope one of you can answer..... When I re potted these Kholerias awhile back I found rhizomes that I took out so I can start new plants or share them. I read Keyrings advice in the stickies about keeping them in moist perlite and in baggies until you see them start to grow but I want to know how much perlite, should they be buried and hidden in it?? And should keep blowing air into the baggies if they go flat???

Here is a picture of what they look like right now and I'm wondering if this is OK or if I should do something different??

First of all.................nancy i have concord...............she is fantastic looking.............all your plants look great...................mine is new so she has never bloomed............

Everyone is having better luck with their Kohlerias and Episicas than i do...........i have them wicked and i am going to have to add more perlite (like Lin suggested) if I am going to grow them as well as Brenda is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is disgusting to see those Kohleria foliages that pretty without bloom......................
Yours look great, Brenda.............

Seeing everyone's pictures is one of my very favorite parts of DG...............what happy campers we are with our babies..................what one can grow another can't........i am about to give up totally on episicas.........and Brenda is showing one ready to bloom and mine has died (LOL)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda..............i guess everyone has a different way of growing those Kohleria rhizomes..........Snow told me to use my regular mix......cover the rhizomes about 11/2 ".........I did that a week ago................just wicked it out in the open.........no cover at all............let me take a picture...........(but i have to say that when i saw some green plants coming up today, I panicked and put her under glass)...................
be right back............

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

If you strain your eyes you will see that there are 4 little green thingys coming up............I quickly put her under a dome when i saw that........

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Wow, that didn't take long at all, you just buried them it a week ago??....I have some little tiny guys like that just poking up with the big plants over in the window but nothing happening with these other rhizomes I took out of the pots.

Hmmm, I may have to go with your method here....

~Brenda

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I had no idea what i was doing...................and didn't even think that she should have been under a dome............just wicked her and left her under the lights.........until today when I noticed those little plants coming up..........she said 11/2" covered up but mine is a 3" pot with 3 rhizomes from 'Laura' that snow gave me as a baby and I let her die...........she did have some good rhizomes................
Snow told me that 3 rhizomes to a 3" pot would make a beautiful plant?????????????
It doesn't hurt to try this way and see what happens.........
Remember Keyring works so hard and gone a lot of the time and can't check all the time like you and i do..................so she finds a way that works for her...........
**************'me thinks' Ki is never in as big of a hurry as i am in wanting plants immediately...........(LOL)

What a wonderful way to start the morning with lots of beautiful plants. Lin, I love your purple mini and Spring Kiss.....Gail your chimeras a so pretty, you have such great plants. Nancy, I have always thought Concord was very pretty, your picture convinced me to order one from LL. Thanks Ladies.

Forgot to ask ---Nancy where on earth did you find the Swedish plant Mormors Mosa? I just love the way it holds that bloom straight up.
