Beth - I can see the stigma is 3-lobed...I wouldn't have expected that...3-lobed stigmas are relatively new species like I.hederacea,I.nil and I.purpurea...most Ipomoea have 2-lobed stigmas...

Post the pale purple flowers...

Ron, the pale purple blooms were what I expected. Most of the photos of Ipomoea aquatica showed a pale purple bloom but what I got were white ones. I personally didn't get any purple blooms yet, just these white ones. Leaves are definitely the aquatica type.
These blooms were from the seeds I got from Thailand. I also have two of your seeds growing (different cf's) that have not bloomed yet. Maybe those will be purple?

I still have the original package the seeds came in.

Beth - That is really a nice looking bloom ya got there! Are they grown in boggy conditions or in water such as a pond?

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

They are potted in soil but the whole pot is submerged in a huge bucket type container full of water.

Very interesting Beth. Might be one I'd like to try sometime. I have 2 small container ponds in my yard and have pretty good luck growing water lilies and other aquatic plants. Never even knew there was an aquatic MG! Ya learn something new every day! :-) Cool MG!!!

A question on the thrilobed stigma, Ron:

You said:

Beth - I can see the stigma is 3-lobed...I wouldn't have expected that...3-lobed stigmas ....

Does that mean the stigma can produce 6 seeds at the most, i.e. 2 seeds per lobe...

Most of my SOH produce 4 seeds because it's a two-lobed stigma?

Martin - The rest of the post includes
"3-lobed stigmas are relatively new species like I.hederacea,I.nil and I.purpurea...most Ipomoea have 2-lobed stigmas..."

All of the species I mentioned as having 3-lobed stigmas do have 3 lobed stigmas...unless some rare plants produce abnormal stigmas...

Ipomoea nil always has 3-lobed stigmas...most of the older species have 2lobed stigmas and I would have thought that I.aquatica would have had only 2-lobes and was surprised to see it having 3-lobes indicating that it is also a relatively new species on the Ipomoea tree...

The stigma lobes are where the pollen sprouts pollen tubes, but the number of locules in the ovary and the number of ovules in each locule are much more related to how many seeds are potentially produced than the number of stigma lobes...

TTY,...

Ron
