I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this 'guy' today. To my eyes he appeared to have a dark purple body with a light fushia colored tail. The color seems somewhat muted in the photos. (I had to run back to the house for the camera, change the battery, and find the memory card but the dragonfly waited patiently and continued to pose for numerous photos.)
I've seen red - deep blood red - ones before but this was not read, definitely more purple.

How pretty, looks like a Roseate Skimmer, Orthemis ferruginea, they are really that color:
