Fall GH pics, post here

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thank you Stressbaby, I am looking forward to participating. You can learn so much sharing with others. I am going to try and get my information on the site today. I am just an old lady who loves her plants, birds (10 hookbills, 1 canary) and Barney, the Barndog.(a large Jack Russell Terrier)

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Thank you Oldmudhouse!!! That will be my winter retreat!!! Get my green fix when everything else is brown.

Finally got a chance to take some pictures. Now that the bubblewrap is finally up (and staying up after a lot of hassle). Mostly orchids and a few bromeliads. Potted up a few pepper plants from the garden today.

Also potted a volunteer tomato plant. I think its a wild cherry. I hope it survives....

This "mother-in-law's tongue" plant I got from my MIL! It really needs divided. Its bloomed the last 2 years though.

My GH is used just for storage in the winter months here
But here is the castor bean that planted itself inside the GH all summer
and is still growing

I thought I'd share what else is growing in the GH.
He/She is pretty big now. Hope she doesn't get too much larger...?

I was winterizing and found her up on the ceiling so I thought I'd share with you.
Do any of you have little friends visiting or residing in your GH???
Should we keep her?

I moved her to a plant and she wanted to climb again.

Nautical, is this an Alien like you had?

SB, did you send me this present??

She is brown with green sides and about 4" (body) long.

I'd sure keep her. Great bug killer! I have one or 2 green anole lizards in my GH most of the time.

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

I did not know that MIL Tongue's bloomed!

Fulton, MO

Doubtful. But we have some enormous mantids in our yard, up to 6 inches. Keep him. I put egg cases in the GH to hatch in the winter.

Conway, AR(Zone 7b)

KW, No I have not had any aliens that look like that. I have caught two small lizards around the house and put them in the GH thinking they would eat a lot of bugs. I have never seen either one of them since I put them in. :( They are just those little lizards that are abundent here, the ones with the blue tails. All I know about them is you can't catch them by the tail, cause they will be gone and all you will have is a piece of tail. Hmmmmm, did not mean that the way it may sounded. :)

I have been up north for a week, just got back and had this pleasant surprise. Passiflora McCain - Thanks stressbaby!

Also, thanks to Digital_Dave I have a Bromeliad getting ready to bloom, will post pic soon.

nautical99, SB,

Wow, that passion flower is really beautiful.

Aren't blooming things in the GH this time of year just great.

KW

Conway, AR(Zone 7b)

This is the fruit that is growing on the Pasiflora McCain. I am not sure if it is edible or what it looks like when it is ripe.

Also, can you grow the seeds? Or is better to take a cutting?

I read one post that stated this plant was hardy to Zone 7. I am 7b, is this a candidate to move outside next summer? Thanks for any info.

This is Anamea Scorpio that I got from Digital_Dave last April. It is just starting to bloom. Thanks Dave! Any additional info on how to care for it would be greatly appreciated. :-)

This is a plant called "Tradescantia" It is sending off these long shoots. I am not sure what I should do with them. Should they be staked up? or just allowed to hang down. If I cut them and root them will they grow a new plant? I really like the plant. Thanks SB. It has grown really well.

These are the shoots that I referred to above.

This is a picture of the end of a Dragon Fruit plant. Are these going to be branches? or are these buds. If they are buds, are they flower buds, and will they produce a fruit?

This is another plant from SB. I not only got the plant from SB, but I also stole his plan for the trellis. :-)

Here is our first orchid...It's a Phalaenopsis. But don't know it's individual name.

Just got it @ Lowes last nite while looking over their pre-winter plant sale.
75% off nut not much left and not on the orchid.
Did get some "Black Magic", Elephant Ears & birdsnest spruce & a honeysuckle plant.

Any guesses on it's name?

I'm just about done on the inside with my foil, bubblewrap. Looks like a spaceship. The South side and part of the East is in clear plastic only.
I also am going to try the old Clear pool solar blanket trick but just ouside over the top.
Outside it's 40 degrees w/ 81% hum.
Inside it's 63 degrees w/ 72% hum.

that heater on the wall is working pretty good so-far, We'll see when it's 15 degrees outside.brrrrrrr.

Does anybody have any preference on lights?

I found these:

http://www.charleysgreenhouse.com/index.cfm?page=_productdetails&productid=5058&cid1=176&cid2=729&cid3=-99

Can it be used as a ceiling light or is it suppose to be right over the plants?

Wow

These are some great pictures! Thanks for sharing.

I'm just building my greenhouse and it will be used primarily to propagate our veggies and stuff.

But if my wife ever saw these pics, she'd be whipping up plans for another 3 GHs. LOL

KW, I also have that Zebra plant. It has done well for me, I have repotted it once. I use to have a real hard time keeping it wet enough, but when I repotted it with the type mix SB uses it has not been a problem. It is blooming again right now.

From the picture you have I think we have the same heater. Are you using the built in thermostat? I would like to use a seperate thermostat for it. I would also like to wire in an hour meter so I could keep track of how many hours a day it runs.

One more.

Nautical, I am using the built-in thermostat for now and it appears to be holding very steady but the settings seem to be off.
Let me know what you do with yours ,I'd sure like to know what I'm using out there.

With my little 1500 watt elect.radiator I had a watt meter in line & I knew just how much electrixtity it gobbled up but with 220 v. I'm not sure how to do it.??

SB, I want you to know your pissa greenhouse warming gifts are ALL really healthy and putting on growth.
Can't wait for blooms..Wizza passion flower, thanks again.

Nautical, those are DF stems, not blooms, sorry. I read that if you chop off 1/2 to 1 inch, it may help promote blooms. So last week I chopped off about 10-15 tips on mine...we'll see. On the Passionfruit, let it sit there (it seems like forever) unitl it yellows and drops from the vine, then it will be ripe.

KW, you made me smile. Nice job.

What's in my greenhouse???

A lot of Insulation !!!

This picture shows the door insulated and another door made of double bubble foil with a zipper installed.
Works good so far...

I installed an exhaust fan earlier this year close to a ceiling vent.
It comes on with a thermostat and the vent is automatic with heat rise.
I wanted to close it off this winter but I still need it now.
So. I insulated the vent itself and I added a drop-down ( Dr. Denton ) stlye panel for access.
The drop-down is held closed w/ velcro and I added a string to pull it open.

Works good as long as you open the drop-down.
I'll seal the whole thing with tape when I have to.

ha ha, pretty crude ehh?
KW

It looks kind-a like a spaceship inside but it's pretty cozy.
I hope all this effort ends up in some heat retention.
I plan to cover the outside (roof & N.wall) with the clear pool cover that is so highly thought of on this and other boards.

Any one else got any good ideas???
I'm wide open for suggestions...
KW

Thumbnail by keywest5
Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

keywest-I don't think it looks crude at all. I think that was really smart to put the velcrox (sp) around the fan to be able to open it up when you need it. But then, I have working grhouses and I don't ever care how they look as long as they get the job done.
I do wonder about the amt of light all you guys get with all this additional insulation that you put up in the winter. How much light does it cut back? I know its on the north side, but light bounces around off the plastic and this insulation stops that.

West Bridgewater, MA

TL,

It's my first year and I'm learning all the time.
I read Shane Smith's book and got the idea from him.

I have the so.wall and 1/2 of the so. roof along with 1/3 of both the e & w walls open to light.
The rest in covered with reflectix insul.

I'll find out if I have over done it in the coming months.

Thanks Tigerlilly, this is how I learn.

Washington, MO(Zone 6a)

KW, I like how you "think outside the box". =)

The first winter is definately the most stressful. I'm going into my second winter, and simply caulking all of the holes I found, has made a huge difference in the temps. I feel a bit better going into this winter, than last. It's early yet, but the few nights we've had in the low 20's, with only one heater fired up so far, have been just fine. Tomorrow, I'll rewire my other thermostat back to heating, and put the other heater in there. It's supposed to be upper 60's for the next week and a half, so I won't need it, but at least it'll be ready. =)

West Bridgewater, MA

EZ,

This was a lot of work to get the GH to this point.
I have actually made the whole thing in 2 pieces that will hopefully come out as only 2 big pieces, top and bottom sections,
I can then store these for next year if it doesn't disintegrate from the sun.

If I can do less and be as well off I'm all for it.

The pictures look dark but thats just my photgraphic ability.
Actually it's very bright in the spaceship with all the foil.

SB, I'm sorry this stuff didn't actually grow in the GH and I'll stick to the original theme and not add any more spaceship photos.
I don't want to mess with you !!!.

Here are some new Hibiscus that just opened.

Wow, that hibiscus is a beauty. Such a deep color. I have a white one with 2 buds on it in the GH now. They should open soon. I got it from Susan (soulgardenlove) at a swap a couple years ago and its still alive!!!
