like tortilla!
What IS Texas Pride?
Position in the word MATTERS! Ll at the start of a word is different than in the middle.
Llano is pronounced Yano, right?
Should be, but usually said as Lano.
it means flat in Spanish
Llano Estacado (Sp. /ˈʎano ˌestəˈkado/, “Staked Plains”) is a region in the southwestern United States that encompasses parts of eastern New Mexico and northwestern Texas. It is a large mesa, or tableland, and relatively flat over most of its terrain.
Correctly sounded as a"y". So many of the correct sounds have been dropped for over a century and have local pronunciations that we hear as more correct than what is correct.
In the New England states a soft "r" is added to the end of many words that have never seen an "R". When in Rome.......
Llano Estacado - Staked Plains. And the name of one of our great wineries.
We posted together - great minds in DG. lol

Not an original name....taken from the area where the grapes are grown.
I worked in Lubbock off and on for 14 years - very familiar with the area, Lou.
So sorry, didn't mean to sound like a KIA
No foul - no harm - just Texas Pride.
20 years ago a friend posed a challenge - DW & I would assist him in visiting every winery in Texas. Almost succeeded - had about 7 to go when we gave up the quest -- now there are over 150 in the state. But we met some great people and covered a lot of roads - was even fun getting lost on some dead ends.
WOW the things you miss out on when you have to go to work on mondays ...lol...
Thanks for all the history and language lessons today!!!!!!!!!
will remember to refer back to this section when trying to pronounce something
San Jacinto is just plain pronounced wrong. Since it has become the popular way....it is acceptable.
S/B Sahn Haceento....accent....ceen
pod, so jealous, would love to know french!
TNN ~ learning english would be a passion of mine ~ LOL
Am glad to hear San Jacinto should be different. Gives it a more historical flavor. Thanks
I had a really good Spanish teacher.....wish she hadn't been gone so long I could tell her.
OK - I've read the posts here and I've been
to a few parts of the world in my time, and I've
lived in Chicago most of my life, and here is what
I have found:
Nice folks are nice the world over, and stinkers abide
everywhere too. If a person has crummy neighbors
everywhere they live, maybe the neighbors are not the
problem - maybe it's them ? I've met with extraordinary
kindness from perfect strangers both in town and in the
country, up North and here in Texas, as well as utter
rudeness and ignorance. The one thing that I have found
to be true is that in the South, if someone asks you how
you are, they will actually expect you to tell them - and
they will listen !!! This is lovely, except when I'm in a big
hurry, LOL.
Now, here's news for all you native Texans - and I'm sure
you're not gonna believe this, but my daughter's in-ground
swimming pool is in the shape of Texas. Yep, it is.
The steps into the pool are up where Amarillo is and
there is a huge planter to the right of it, where there is a
fountain and a circular 8 Ft. pond that drains into the pool
and helps to aerate it. In front of the planter, the pool
extends to East Texas, and the diving board is right about
where Houston would be. Everybody who sees it just shakes
their heads. The woman who had it built owned the local bank
and her family had lived here back to the early 1800's.
Now, what confuses me is this:
Chipotle is spelled with the L after the T, but it's pronounced
chip- oL-Te. What's up with that? Nobody can tell me why
and you can tell I lead a busy life because I actually have time
to wonder about things like this :o)
Anyways, like they say - I wasn't born here, but I got here as
fast as I could - even if it took me almost 67 years to do it !
Hmmm I pronouce it with the l after the t. chip-poat-lay.
So the pool is old? When did they start building inground pools? I mean I guess the Romans used that idea but I have never heard of an old old house that had one original!?
TNN ~ may I suggest a "to be continued" ~ part two on this thread. I just noticed this am that it takes longer to load than my "high security" bank account access does. From a dial up DGr, it would be appreciated Ma'am... pod
I will start a new one....but seems the What IS Texas Pride? question has been answered....it's all in the history.
I will have terry close this one. :D New thread here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/778692/

No need to close this one... But all things "Texas" seems to develop into interesting discussions. I have enjoyed it thoroughly ~
