Never imagined I'd say something like this, but... What a beautiful moth! lol ; ) What's the difference between a luna moth and other moths?
Could she have hatched early because it wasn't cold inside?
That is a Beautiful Luna! So sad that she probably won't survive the winter.
Luna moths sole purpose for living are to reproduce and lay eggs. The adult moths (as she is) do not even have mouth parts for feeding. The last brood of the season (which she was from) should have over-wintered, and hatched in the spring. Adult moths only live 7-10 days. With no others hatching at the same time, she has no purpose. Even if a male were to hatch in the next day or so, and they were to breed, the sweet gum and other hardwood trees are beginning to turn ant the leaves will fall soon. I would never be able to keep the cats going for another 6-8 weeks. I can only hope that the others will remain in cocoon until next spring.
I didn't even know a moth could be beautiful colored, etc.........................nice..........
******************I am feeling sad she won't live......................

I really need help...............and Snow is not around evidently..................I planted these streps from seed................now I don't know how big they have to be to give each one a solo pot???????? Look at the brown tips,.......i think I burned them with fertilizer........but after they start growing I can always cut that leaf off...........
BRENDA.................help please.............i know you have done this several times........has anyone else?
thanks
My Gosh ... That is a lot of Streps from seed! Good for you! They sure look big enough to me to have their own individual homes, but then again I have no idea with Streps.
Wowee Gail! How fabulous that you got all of those from seed! I haven't grown from seed but the ones I did get from leaves were much smaller than these when I potted them up! And they are doing good. I think these would do great in their own little pots.
I'm trying to remember the pictures Snowrose showed of her variegated strep babies when she potted them up, they certainly seemed to be this size or even a bit smaller so go for it!

thanks..................I just asked you on another thread so you don't have to answer again.........got it from the horse's mouth right here.............doing it this weekend..........very excited..................
Brenda.............this is funny................I am sending you a strep with giant seed pods ............I mess up on the first ones and didn't get any because I waited too long.............you either have to promise to send me some of the seed or wait a couple of weeks and I will get the seeds and share with you on the variegated onel..............have been dying for some seed from it and just now learning how to gather the seed at the right time................the pods are about 5 or 6" long..............
Oh my, you better keep it and collect the seeds first!! You have more experience than I do (since I have none!) at knowing when the time is right!
Too funny, we're bouncing all over with these topics and then I'm posting my pictures on the wrong thread!! Glad you could keep up!
So do you have to pollinate the streps somehow to get the seed pods or if you leave them alone and don't trim the flowers off will they make a seed pod automatically??
~Brenda
All I know is that sometimes you get good seed pods by slipping the spent bloom off gently................it then takes quite a while before they start to turn brown and twisting..........you have to get them at the exact right time to get the wonderful seeds.........but i don't know anything about pollinating..............the big red strep I already have seeds from...............just curious to see what the blooms will look like...................you know they don't come true from seed i don't think..........just fun to see what you do get.............
Now Snow does all kind of pollination with episcias and streps i think..............I am not anywhere close to that.................i am just learning to get the seeds from the seed pods........let me take a picture to show you how big these pods are from the variegated one.............
Oh my goodness, those are so cool...Ok I'm going to try this with my Maasen's White, it has been such a trooper for me ...so I've gently slipped a couple of spent blooms off of her and now I'm going to wait see what happens in the next few weeks or months........
~Brenda
good luck.............you will certainly recognize a seed pod............especially when they are this big...................I need to learn to also save the small seed pods on other streps..........Petticoats, for example, has small but fat seed pods.................
