To tell you the truth I found that I don't like them very much. If they all are like the ones I had the vines are small, sparse and not at all appealing to me.
They also don't have very many flowers on them.
Japanese MG
Well, I doubt anyone will force you to grow them :)
I love them and don't own a single one. I wish I did. You can send me yours and I'll grow them!
Sorry you tried them and don`t like them. I love them and will always grow them. Your Sunrise Serenade I saw that you tried should never be small or sparse. Where did your seeds of Sunrise Serenade come from? How did you grow them? Did they get full sun? Too much shade will make them small and sparse.
Karen
I don`t think Sunrise Serenade is Japanese. I`m unsure if which higes are Japanese or what about that. Could someone more experienced with names help here? I would appreciate it very much.
The Sunrise Serenade is a purpurea.
So is this this ipomoea nil you are talking about? Is it the kikyo crossed seeds sent to you discussed here:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/766825/
That you don`t like? They were a free gift. I found some very beautiful examples and gathered seeds from those. The ones I grew were far from being sparse. They are supposed to be small as far as not growing more than about 6 feet. Either your growing conditions weren`t right or your taste is different and you`d like growing the larger flowered varieties. If you don`t like the kikyo with the interesting leaves, maybe you could try something else next year?
I wouldn`t write off Japanese Morning Glories because one thing I grew didn`t do well or suit my taste. Practice makes perfect.

Mullettman, we can't have a JMG lover go without seeds. I'm putting you in my December file to send you some. For insurance, dmail me about that time anyway.
Makshi, sorry you weren't converted into one of the obssessed. There are so many different kinds - approximately 50 genera, 1,000 species and who know how many cultivars of JMGs - that there is probably something out there to pull your heart strings. Ipomoea youjiro 'Velvet Plum' grew up over the arbor and over and along the yew hedge to the tune of 25' and at its blooming height, had quite a few blooms simultaneously even in the partial shade it got - and it's still churning out a few blooms while its pods ripen. If you change your mind and would like to try that one, give me a dmail in December, too.
Welp, back to that "Never-Never Land" betwixt the labeled root and color-coded blossom - y'all wish me luck in associating pods with vines before frost. Will spend more time here when frost brings me out of this mulishly enchanted place one way or another. Moral: Give the unknown breathing space (thanks Ron - nice phrase) as in plenty of space between vines whose behavior you aren't sure of.
ps - Velvet Plum was very unusual - many other MGs stayed smaller and are not giving me any tussle right now. Also, some were stingy with flowers, too. There can be so many reasons why. But who knows? Makshi, maybe if you tell us how you grew your MGs and what sort of conditions they were growing in, maybe there's something different you could do - as well as try vines known to be more vigorous and prolific.
Karen-blue
I was talking about the cross. I do know that the ssmg is not a jap. The cross only had about 6 leaves, and got about 3ft. long.
I would like to try it again in another location and see what happens. I am saving the seeds and will plant them next year Lord willing and the creek don't rise.
makshi,
F2 Hybrid grow outs are not tested and proven cultivars. I was giving you(or whoever ended up getting the seeds) a chance to "find" something. I gave the seeds out freely to distribute them with no reservations. F2 growouts do not always yield amazing flowers but in this one I found 3 keepers out of more than 30 plants. So a few rare finds is always a possibility. It takes work and patience.
You have to pick through them to find the good ones. You see a bunch of ok and nice looking flowers and then surprise! There is a real beauty waiting for you one morning. Beauty is also in the eye of the beholder.
Some of the mutants have parent plants that do not look quite as fancy but they are very important for seed production.
I`m in awe of the tremendous variety of these flowers. Some varieties are better for more experienced growers of JMG because they do need special care and have specific requirements in order for them to thrive. Some varieties are much easier.
Give it another try. :)

Makshi - Is growing MGs in a container an option for you? I had huge success growing out 21 cultivars for the first time ever. I am a newbie to MGs and after such success have become an enabled addict. :-)
Here is a thread that I had started about my little grow-out experiment:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/769055/
I think that I will be growing out most of my MG seeds in containers, only this time I will use thin PVC as the bamboo rotted and broke off from the weight of the vines. And I plan to plant each vine in a separate container instead squeezing 4 them into one shallow rectangular container.

becky, I do have some in a container that did pretty well. I will try a few more next year. Gardener I will try again next year. Maybe I will get something I like better.
I am going to stop watching this thread because it seems to be rubbing the wrong way.
beckygardener,
See, the trial and error is important. You try out a new idea first. If it works well for you then you go all out and grow more the same way. Sometimes, you can have a brainstorm and then find new obstacles to climb along the way.
The best advice I can give anyone is to try one thing before you do everything that way. If you mess up one thing then at least everything doesn`t get messed up.
Another tip is your way doesn`t have to be the universal best way. It just needs to serve your purposes on your way to your own success.
Karen
makshi, We are trying to help you. :)
Karen
Oh Makshi I have been reading this thread and I don't think it's rubbing the wrong way at all...I think you just have a bunch of MG lovers trying to convince you not to give up on the wonderful world of MG we have become addicted to!! ♥
There is such a variety out there, what one loves someone else may so OH No way!!! I personally am not to fond of some of the mutants that I've seen and some are entranced by them!! I like a lot of the blues and purples myself...Don't give up on us just yet!!!☺
Here is one of mine that didn't do to well kind of straggly, flower not real impressive..I won't be growing it next year...
I too have a few I`m not going to grow again in favor of ones I prefer. I don`t think I`ll be as free about giving away my grow out seeds since results vary so much and I don`t like making people dissappointed.
Hybrids are works in progress. I like making people happy so I`m going to stick with my tried and true.
This is one of my hybrids with lots of blooms and a long vine. I`m not sharing or trading these until late next year because I have two more generations of growing and selecting to get it right.
Try a youjiro. I have never been disappointed in a youjiro. Karen
Karen - These are simply stunning!!! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4034377
beckygardener, Thanks. Now that is why I keep growing. It is sights like this. Karen
I agree Stunning!!! By the way Karen, I certainly wasn't disappointed and would love to grow any of your flowers!!!☺
If I share any more mixed or open pollinated seeds I`ll write "Results may Vary" and "Grow at your own Risk" on the packages. lol :)
Do you see me raising and waving my hand over here, Karen!! LOL!
I, too, would love to participate again in future grow-outs that you or anyone else does! No disappointment here either! Love my purple blizzards! (And I'm gonna trade some folks for some of the pink blizzards and solids very soon!) I am one HAPPY CAMPER!!!
Love what you grow and grow what you love!! That's what we do as gardeners. I can't count the number of times a plant I lusted over did not thrive under my care, and moved to the greenhouse in the sky--or the gut of a deer---or rabbit.. Everyone still thinks I have a greenthumb--why? 'Cos i hide the bodies well and replace them with 2 different plants. ;) Keep on growing!!
tommie
Yeah, you never know what you'll get, I love surprises too..
Karen, those are really great colors and the shades of those colors are new to the Fuji varieties.. I have not seen those at all anywhere.
Marie, you are doing a great job, I lost all my JPMGs the first year, but now I know to at least give them some bloombooster, at least once, I never fed them anything at all.. don't believe that, they need nutrients.. Keep on trying.
A.

P.S. Marie,
You can't UNwatch your own thread, I tried once on mine, because I didn't want to read it anymore, but, it did not work till everyone stopped posting on it.. if you started the thread, it will show up every time someone posts on it...

Ya`ll are making me laugh! I appreciate everything everyone has done. Trading is still alive and well on DG.
Tommie, That is hilarious. My compost pile is my "plant heaven" exept the glory vines cant go in there because of the seed pods. he he!

A, if you go to your preferences there is a box you can uncheck so you don't have to watch every thread you make. Sometimes there are way to many!! LOL
