Hi Hilary!! I don't know what they are but this is a great picture of them LOL How big was the nest? It looks like a lot like mud potter wasp nests (I'm not suggesting that as an ID) that I see on the outer walls of our office

I think you may be right. They certainly look like wasps of some kind and the nests were made from dried mud. The nests were about 4" - 5" across and were on the ground and on tree trunks.
Does that size tally with the ones you see?

No, ours are small, maybe a 1/2 to 3/4 inches. Now that you mention it I can see they look like wasps...I thought they were beetle like (Embarressing, I just got new glasses and they don't "work". New ones Tuesday) Here's a link to a BF photo of a nest at my office. http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/showimage/1160/ Sometimes they're single but often in groups of two or three

Yes, they look remarkably similar - just on a different scale.... I'll do some searching along those lines and see what I can find. Thanks for your help in pointing me in the right direction. Good luck with the glasses.

I think, judging by the size of the antennae, I would be looking at Velvet Ants, still in Hymenoptera. There's several pages of these in Bugguide, I've skimmed through and haven't got any clues as to Genus.

OK wallaby, I'll look at those too, thanks. Am learning a lot while I'm looking :)
