Thanks for the article link - that means I can get more out of my Black Opal basil! yay!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

critter, I would really like to try the Italian basil, too. My Sicilian DH would be thrilled :0)

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Cinda.. i'll go look it up. I think I've reached my edit limit for the day on the have/want thread. Why do they do that anyway??

Thanks!

Susan

(Cathy), MO

I've seen that before in here and wondered. The "I've reached my limit on edits". What does it mean? Not sure what you guys are talking about

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Cat, if you go back and edit your post a bunch of times, you'll eventually get that message from DG and you will be prevented from making any more changes to your posts until the next day. Is ten edits in 24hrs the max'?

I'm not sure why there's a limit either...

(Cathy), MO

Ok thanks. I understand why I see it on the coops now! Thanks wrightie!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Wrightie, a bunch of evil weevils hatched out of my hollyhock seeds, and there are hardly any left now without holes! I guess they should've gone into the freezer when I picked them...

Gram, I've also got Sicilian Basil growing out in my garden, no ripe seeds yet but getting there. The flavor is similar to my Italian Genovese, but milder and without the anise taste. :-)

jill what do the weevils look like?

ah the rain..it stopped today finally...but will be back again on sunday...oh joy

pam

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

please please please, pam, send your excess rain our way

(Maggie) Jacksonvill, FL(Zone 9a)

Michaela,

I'd LOVE some of your Sea Holly and Obedience plant, columbine, & cone flower.

Cornflower, agastache, & hollyhocks would be nice too.

Thanks,

Maggie

Sorry, I didn't even realize we were back on thread #2.

Pam, the weevils were small, dark brown, with very long snouts... they looked like... ummm... weevils, LOL.

Found the BF page on them! http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/1012/

Here's another link that might help some of you having trouble identifying seeds. I know it has helped me.

http://www.wintersown.org/wseo1/Specific_Varieties.html

Part of the reason I think I have some ripe seeds is that I haven't done any deadheading at all. Most of my plants are new this year and I wanted them to put their energy into root growth instead of rebloom.

Wrightie~ i didn't want to jump in and provide false info about the coreopsis. I collected seeds from mine last year, and this is the procedure I used. Remove the dried flowerhead from the stem, split the head deep down and crumble the inner part on a paper plate, you will see a few seeds that look like small brownish grey discs like ticks, a few will have part of the stem attached. The rest will be chaff, they will be lots of tiny dark round bits..they too are chaff. After collecting the seeds, allow to dry for several days. Hope that helps, there may be an easier way, but that worked for me.

I was going to make a joke about the big can, but then I decided it might not be too funny. About it being for the most gluttonous of you all. :))

To go on a bit about the hollyhock weevils, they eat the center out of the seed. This as opposed to the notch that hollyhock seeds all have, (and are supposed to have), on the edge.

Wrightie, I'm glad somebody else answered about the Coreposis -- I forgot to save seed, or is I did save it, then I forgot to label it because I thought I'd remember! Ha!

I have some Hollyhocks, and so does pamsue, so we should be good to go on them.

I also have some of Critters "real Italian Basil from Italy", so don't worry about that one, either. It is delicious.

Suzy, how many packets of the Italian Basil do you want me to include, then? 10? 20? LMK! :-)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I might have gotten confused -- You have a LOT of different basils. I *thought* you said the Sicilian Basil was barely just going to seed, and I think I confused that with the "Real Italian Basil". There were so many people requesting it, that I was worried you'd not have enough.

So you have "real Italian from Italy"
Sicilian
AND Genovese?

LOL! And that's not even counting the colored leaves and cinnamon!

I'd say send 10-15 packs, can you do that?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

The "Real Italian from Italy" is the seed I sent out last year labeled "Italian Genovese." This year, for the first time, I tried Sicilian Basil (ordered from an Italian seed company). I hope I'll get seeds from it and from my other basils, but I probably won't get them in time for this swap.

I've got enough seeds & labels for 14 packets of the Italian Genovese, and I'm sure I'll have more ripe seed before frost, so I'll have it available later on in case anybody misses out on it for this swap.

I do have some extra (commercial) Sicilian basil seed from last year, so I was planning to put in a packet of that for Gram's DH.

With a little luck, I should also have plenty of extra seed later on for Lemon Basil, Lime Basil, Cinnamon Basil, Minette Basil (small leafed compact variety), and a purple basil (maybe Red Rubin, have to check my notes). I probably won't offer 'Spicy Globe' seeds again because they didn't grow out true to type (not even the first year, from 3 tries with different commercial seed), but I'll save them for myself because they make the best J. Beetle trap (I don't eat them, just spray them as a trap crop). The 'Greek Basil' from last year didn't come true from my saved seed, and I don't think I'll get enough extra seed from the 'Cameo' or 'Lettuce Leaf' varieties to offer them. But yes, I do grow a lot of different basils... I love them!

Suzy, I could take the gluttonous joke... !! :)

I don't see it as being gluttonous... I see it as vocally desiring great beauty from your gardens in mine... In great quantity! :)

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I almost made a joke about myself when I mentioned the 'large can' LOL. but I resisted.

critter, thanks for the Sicilian basil seeds...DH will be excited :0)

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Okay.. I fixed it to add "In great quantity"! :)

Susan

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I admit it, grampapa. I was admiring your large can.

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

Speaking of large cans....

I have to post pictures of our elaborate Haloween display somewhere.. But yesterday I was out front collecting more seeds for this swap and this car load of teenagers drive by and one screams "that's fat".. and of course I'm totally peeved and how dare they talk about my backside like that.. And I want to remember their car so I know which home they visit in the neighborhood.. And then after fuming for a minute, I realize he said "that's phat" referring to our display.. as in cool, neato, awesome.. words I would have used when i was a teenager! :)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Must See Pictures!
(I'll let you decide what to take said pic's of, SGL.)

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

I'd get kicked off Daves for my can.

I'll do the halloween props!

LOL!

I would love some of your agastache and columbine. Rachel

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

Wind, sorry, I just read your question about the jasmine. I always plant them in the ground, where they freeze back to the ground in winter, but come back from the roots come spring and make big bushes. I'm sure they would be fine in pots brought in and have a better start for the spring, I've just never done it that way.

Peggy

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thanks Peggy, I was just curious, sounds nice. I guess, in zone 6b here, I would have to bring it in like a brug. I don't need another over winter 'tree size' inside plant!

I have hardy Jasmine, Jasminum x Stephanense that I got from Lazy S online. It is hardy from zone 5-10. I've been moving it around to find the right spot for it for the past few years! Although it hasn't outright died, it hasn't been too happy. Hopefully next season it will grow better in its latest new spot :)

(Maggie) Jacksonvill, FL(Zone 9a)

We're such an excited group, we're now on page 3 ;-)
