CLOSED: Spiny Orb Weaver

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Here is an interesting looking spider from this neck of the woods. It is called a Spiny Orb Weaver and almost loks like it is carryng a crab on its back. Sorry the photo is blurry. the wind was blowing the day I took the photo and I could not get a clear picture. I will try to get a clearer photo next time I see one. They do come in different colors, depending on the exact type of Spiny Orb Weaver. Again, this is also a benevolent spider, so please don't hurt her/him.

Thanks Bama! I've got one or two in my yard. Glad to know they're friendly.

I used to be terrified of spiders and killed any and all when I encountered them. Since I have edcuated myself about the 'good' versus the 'bad' spiders, I tend to be protective of the good ones. I figure there are a LOT of people who are arachnophobic, so perhaps by educating them about the friendly ones, we can save some spiders, which will thrive and eat the nasty bugs in our gardens and yards!

There are very few venomous spiders in the US. Just because a spider looks scary or alien doesn't mean it is a threat. Down here in this neck of the woods, you really only really have to worry about the Brown Recluse, the Black Widow and the Brown Widow. Some spiders are venomous, but their mouths are too small to bite humans, so they are not to be feared. I've found What's That Bug to be a great resource for identifying spiders and other 'critters'.

The Red Legged Purse Spider was almost extinct in this area, but has been making a comeback. I discovered WTB while trying to find out what kind of bizarre alien I had found in my bathroom. I'm glad I trapped and released her instead of killing her.
