I'm thinking of moving to North Carolina - Should I?

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

The Brown stone is across the street from Meredith and on Blue Ridge road is anoth hotel just maybe 1 and 1/2 miles by the fairground.

I was at Meredith last night for a Soriety Meeting. I love that Campus.

You can probably look on-line under government and then go to teachers /or education and find all the jobs in Wake county.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Home Again is an antique store.
Homestead Hotels (homesteadhotels.com) is the other. ($60+ per night, but it has amenitites)
I found a Motel 6 on Arrow Drive that is closer than those and significantly less expensive ($35.99 click 6 special!), so that's what I'll go with more than likely. Not fancy, but I won't be hanging around in the room anyway.

Thank you for looking that up for me, tigerlily, and pointing out the distance/traffic hassle from Cary.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

North Carolina has a website that lists about all the jobs as well as the districts, so I won't have to go county by county. This is one of the attractions of the state, as a person looking for a teaching job. I don't want to look city/county by county, but at many then narrow to areas and one district. :-)

Teachers-teachers posts lots of openings, too.
However, the job fair in March will have representatives from 30+ or more school districts.
http://www.meredith.edu/career/students/fairs-tnf.htm

If I plan well, perhaps I'll have specific districts to approach for final interviews by then.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

I am beginning to think we should go with you to the job interviews, real estate appts ect!! lol That we have become a real part of your search for a new home...maybe we should get a bus

Ardesia-thanks for the sympathy- I would rather have the rain, wouldnt we all?? lol but I sure do appreciate the concern. Only a gardener would really know what we are going thru. I am starting to get a little bit irritable...it just erodes your outlook-shortterm.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

lol
I could rent a minivan.

Thank you for the accommodation suggestions. I've got a seriously tight budget. I'm glad to see that Motel6 in those parts has some of the lower rates of anywhere.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

lol....just don't answer your door...or even the phone...trust me, we don't have to be "big city" to have great deviants round here

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh, I know...Trop, but they're not so bad, most of the time.
Is the one on Arrow in Raleigh in a bad neighborhood?
I've had some experiences, but since I usually stay in the Motel6 because I usually have dogs, I know some of the better ones. If they offer queens instead of doubles, in usually means they are newer or at least remodeled. They're usually next to the freeway and chain restaurants...I'm not afraid. Besides, I carry a zapper gizmo when I can't be with my dogs.

I'll probably do a nice one or two nights, since I'll need a bathtub to soak in after spending hours on the road.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Just realized that i responded to what Ardesia said (in another thread -obviously) in this thread. Well, Ardesia-if you are reading this-here you go! lol

edited to ask: Tropicanna-are you calling me a deviant??? lol

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

no, not you tiger, lol, and wasn't even talking about Raleigh but it acutally was a Motel 6 in Raleigh I was thinking about when I said that...don't recall the area exactly though.

but nothing against Raleigh, I'm not trying to be funny

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

I know that you weren't-just busting your chops (is that how that saying goes? and what exactly does it mean?? lol )

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Might be a long shot - but maybe folks at Meredith have secured prices at some of the hotels. Did you call and ask? Also - perhaps longshot but worth an inquiry - maybe there are (or could be if asked) an accommodation for low cost stay on the premises. Are you traveling with the pups?

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

No, just me, flying in. Good thought, but I doubt there are accommodations at the college and most of those hotels are out of my budget.
Is the Motel 6 area so bad?
As long as it's clean and no drug deals going down - or homecoming or something in a little town. :-) I've mostly had good experiences in them.
Someone on the citydata forum recommended I contact rescue organizations in NC to get some ideas about best places for me with dogs.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

I don't know anything about the area of that particular Motel 6 but I agree nice clean facilities and you won't be there except to sleep so you don't need the extras. I have called hotels/motels to inquire about the area and safety and truly I get truthful answers - so you can call and ask. But, I encourage you to call the college - you never can tell if they keep a few rooms open for guests in the dorms.

That is a good idea about the rescue organizations giving feedback. My only experience has been what I have observed with what can be done (or not) in the public places as far as how welcome pets are. At the most we have only had three dogs for a short time but mostly have consistently lived with two max. On weekends I go downtown (Hillsborough) for breakfast (street seating) and without exception, I have had a table neighbor with four feet (several). Like most places, dogs are a part of our lives and while most times cannot go in the shops/restaurants, they are welcome on the streets. Example: on the outside of several shops in Hillsborough - you can find a bowl with water and a jar of treats for our pups so that when you tie them outside they look forward to it!! On the other hand, leash laws are strict. I am 99.999 percent positive that no limit on numbers of domestic animals exist for the residential areas - and like I said out here in the rural buffer (5 min from Chapel Hill and 10 from Durham so not really 'rural' as in isolated) neighbors have other types of animals like llama, goats, horses, etc. There is a two acre minimum lot size and maybe that is why. Town planners are building another dog park nearby. Our animal rescue is fairly well funded and active and can remember last year - maybe two years ago there was a 'war' going within the county govt / animal control/ folks fighting about who is doing what best for the homeless animals - cage size, medical care, overall management. etc. Not so good (the fighting) but...not so bad either since it shows that things are monitored and the function is important.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

yeah, Paws, I know I couldn't even tell you about it on here, but you kinda nailed it in a nutshell..just watch out for anywhere that does weekly rates

tiger..I probably could say some bad stuff about Raleigh but was born in Durham myself before moving to the coast... so not much room to speak there....lol

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

Watch it, tropi...We'll all move to your house;-))
Bev

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

Bev, I guess I could start about how the roads are so messed up around Raleigh that I still get lost there after being an NC native my whole long life...lol...I got so lost leaving the park that day, it took me nearly an hour to get to the interstate and somehow I came out in Raleigh after starting in Garner..and I followed the durn signs....lol

But Raleigh's great, who couldn't love Hillsborough St?

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Especially a street with dog treats!
:-)
Is it May yet? I want the move to be over. Been there, done that too many times-long distance moves, that is.

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

Are you making fun of Hillsborough St. now? I guess you haven't seen the new plans they have for the roundabout smack in the middle of it;-0 I think they should name it the 'Bowling for Students' roundabout! What do people around here know about those?!

Bedford, VA(Zone 7a)

Tropicanna,

I am with you on the roads! One day last year, while the work was being done on 85, I came down 501 south from South Boston, trying to get to 15/501 south (with the help of MapQuest, the DOT's partner in crime!). There were detour signs to rte 85 but once you got off 85, they just stopped and there was nothing to say where we were! We went back and forth a few times on 85, had to go to the Visitor Center to find out how to get to where we wanted to go which involved travelling through some seedy areas!

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh, those go nowhere detour signs - grrrr...
Roundabouts hit the coast in the last five years. Folks don't have a clue. I grew up with them in upstate NY, so am ok with them, but I remember going around and around one in Binghamton many times before I figured out which spoke to take. Also took the wrong spoke plenty of times. That was one BIG circle. :-)

I'm not going to live where I have that much traffic, but I'll visit, at least for that job fair, then head out. I like remote, isolated, but within 90 minutes of somewhere with color, culture, restaurants, transportation, etc. I often don't leave home here for four or five days (of course, now that I shouldn't drive my truck until I get it out of 4wd where it got stuck the other night, I want to go everywhere), no problem, not even to go to the po to get the mail. I'm good at being a hermit, so that's why I need to move-I've discovered I need more people around when I'm ready for them.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Put a 'dot' on greensboro and then draw a big circle 90 minutes out )~ 100 miles??) you will find plenty. You'll scoop up Orange County (Chapel Hill) Durham County... Winston Salem, the mountains(!!) You will be near schools and the arts and the art-sy. You will find rural and metropolitan. And, maybe upgrading the academics to obtain the credentials you say you need to be employed won't be so difficult.

PS the doggie biscuits in Hillsborough ..I was referencing the town of Hillsborugh not Hillsborough Street.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

(MissingRosie, next time you are having lunch in downtown Hillsborough you should amble across the street to the Farmers' Market. I'm there every Saturday and DGer's get my discount, or better! Always great to meet another Dave's Gardener!) (Or perhaps we already know each other and just don't know it?)

Shoe
Can you make one the last week end in April?

I figure that way we can get a jump on the beginning of growing season.

Lavina

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

OK I will - just bought two of those gorgeous photo postcards of Hillsborough. I have bought eggs from one of the stands and honey from another --is that you? I've never bought the plants - but been awfully tempted. This heat and drought.... plus the fact that we still haven't got the fencing up (the deer) ... I had my eye on a fig that was perfect... ...but I knew better..

Bedford, VA(Zone 7a)

OOOh, where's the Farmers Market in Hillsborough, is it off of 86 south? I've come down that way from SoBo as well but never seen any signs for the FM

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

It is on Churton street - which turns into Old 86 as you head towards Chapel Hill. If you have driven through downtown Hillsborough... it is diagonal from and across Churton from Tupelo's restaurant. Coming from your way it would be on the left. Horseshoe can probably tell you better because as I understand it - the vendors soon will be moving into a better space (still downtown). Can be found only Saturday mornings.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Lavina, our local mkt opens in April now-a-days but if I don't have much to sell I wait til first of May. So....it's a chance, eh!?

M-Rosie, I sell eggs but not honey. However(!), I'm the only one there who sells figs so I'm quite sure you were looking at some of my stock! Yay! (And ya didn't even know a DGer was close by, eh?) *grin!

And yes, the Farmers' Mkt is in downtown Hillsborough on Churton St (aka 86S) in the Suntrust parking lot (on the left if going South). We've recently had a new "public shelter" built that we may be moving into next year, depending on the politics that are going on with it right now and that will be a block further down and two blocks east. The "main season" mkt will continue till the end of this month (Sat only) and then begins the Winter Mkt (every other Saturday and only from 10 am - 12). By the way, we also have a Wed mkt but it ended the last Wed in September and won't start up again til next May.

M-Rosie, should you decide to stop by, do as others do and "look for the guy in the big hat and no shoes"!

Sorry to have gotten so far off topic, 4paws! So now, we return back to our regularly scheduled program.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi,
We live in Va. which is about 1 hour from Greensboro NC. I am on the NC boarder. We moved here from NJ, 17 or 18 years ago..We wanted to raise our boys in the country. All 4 of them. I now have 2 Southern daughter in laws.. One more coming. The Triangle is a good place to land... :-) It took us awhile here in Danville, but that area has more transplants then here or I should say this is harder to break into then that area.... On the flip side of the coin I could never ever live in NJ again... I love it here... I am in God's country if you ask me...
So ya'll come on down for a visit and I will carry you to Wal-Mart... :-)
Hugs,
Susan

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi Susan,
Wal-Mart, eh? :-)
I've found another employment fair which may be better for me to go to. It's in Greensboro on Feb 2, rather than Raleigh on March 4. The one in Feb. will host 70-75 NC districts as well as 20-25 districts from other states in the east. That will broaden my choices a bit, though I have to admit to feeling overwhelmed by it all!

:-)

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

You will do fine... Just take a couple of deep breaths and then let it out.... They are always looking for good teachers around here... You will like it... I live in the sticks and have ever major place in a 10 min. ride... :-) I like that...LOL
Hugs,
Susan
