Planting Red Spider Lily Bulbs?

Apex, NC(Zone 7b)

hello all, I am in NC zone 7, and have a question about planting spider lily bulbs.

my dd and I were driving by a park area near our house, and saw these crazy red flowers popping out of the ground - no plant, just flowers. we had never seen anything like them before. Because the area they were growing on gets mowed bi-weekly, and they would have been mowed down today - so we went and dug them up.

After several hours on the internet, we were able to positively ID the flower as Lycoris Radiata, aka Red Spider Lily. I have 12 bulbs total. I'm assuming it's a pretty hearty plant, since it grew on it's own where it was not supposed to be.

Question - Should I plant the bulbs now (sept) or store them till spring? If they cant be planted till spring, what is the best way to store them? They were so cool!!

Thanks!!!

Plant them... :)

thanks! will do.

fyi - the "park" is a common area in my subdivision that used to be part of a farm. according to a neighbor, the odd plant pops up now and then and the lanscaping crew just tosses them. i mention this because on another forum someone misunderstood my post to mean I was poaching from parks. reasonable misunderstanding as I re-read it.

These types of bulbs aren't fond of being disturbed, so if they don't bloom next year, don't be disappointed as they will eventually.

moby is right. however..............if the bulbs are big enough and you throw in a handful of bulb booster it is possible that they would bloom next year. i have some that i moved last year and some of the bigger bulbs bloomed any way this year. but that is the exception and not the rule.

Thanks for the tip, I will do that :-)

I'm so glad you mentioned the poaching thing posted on another thread. I was going to politely suggest that many savvy people do plant these on purpose in lawns.
