They cut the oak tree down!

The tree in Jena, LA. That will certainly take care of things, won't it? Things will be a lot more peaceful with a barren courtyard, nothing but a concrete slab.

If I were the school administrator, rather than remove the "offending" tree, I would have cancelled classes one day and had a school picnic under it.

Each student would be paired with a kid that he didn't know well, and have to get to know him well enough to introduce him to the rest of the class, discuss his family, his interests and his future plans.

According to Newsweek the tree was cut down and used for firewood.

Very sad. I agree your solution sounds much nicer!

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

I woulda just pruned some switches off from it and give them all a whippin'.

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

I would give my opinion, but it would probably get me in trouble here.

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

Give me a land of boughs in leaf,
A land of trees that stand;
Where trees are fallen there is grief;
I love no leafless land."
- A.E. Housman

Sadly fitting and rather prophetic.
