I found this guy on the outside of my garage this morning. No web to be seen. I'm in Illinois right outside of Chicago. Does anyone know what he is and is he dangerous?

I think its a wolf spider, but I don't know the genus/species

I agree, wolf spider, not harmful, eats other bugs. Looks scary, but is very nice, really.
