Probably the last big show of blooms

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Wow, such a nice display of blooms. Very pretty. Thanks.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Very pretty, might call that a "flush", a BIG one. Looks like an umbrella.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Ooh, thanks so much. I can't believe I got that much bloom out of a one-year plant. It shaped itself that way naturally. There are still lots of small buds on it too. I hope they make it before frost but during the last 2 years, frost has come much later than usual. I am amazed to get so much out of one-year plant. *blush*
One odd thing. this year the buds on several of the brugs started out pointed and sticking up in the air instead of hanging down. They did eventually hang down but stayed pointed and I expected them to be damaged but they opened OK. Is that normal?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Yes, it is natural for some kinds of brugs to have pointers. LOL! Versicolor types do for sure.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

thank goodness. i was afraid the blooms would be deformed.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

It's form is beautiful! Congrats!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

still blushing from the thrill and comments. But all it has done is make me want more. My Dr. Seuss is not doing well, but I read in the Plantsfiles that it likes more sun than I gave it so I'm moving it next year.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Lovely, brugs! These are closeup shots do you have them in pots or in the ground? I first had mine in pots and they just didn't grow very well. I moved them to a garden spot and they are do better but I am afraid it is to late for blooms now. I wish I had a GH to store them in. :(

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Teresa;
These are tender perennials, as mild as our winter. They do die back to the ground. My neighboring brug-grower planted them directly outdoor. This year, due to the drought and heat. None of them did very well. I planned on overwinter a few prized ones inside to protect from winter frost. I do believe however, they bloom better from previous year's woods. Have a South facing window? If not a couple of extra florescent lights to keep them inside is worth the effort. Good lucks.
Kim

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Kim, what do you use to keep the gnats away? I brought 4 in one year and put them by a south facing window in my DDs bedroom, we were totally infested. My DH and kids were not happy campers!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Teresa,
You don't mean mites? I'd go to the nearest nursery ask them for products that control those critters. Treat the potted plant throuroughly before you bring it indoor. Good hand wash, clean utility tools, avoid cross contamination from other plants. And frequent inspection, repeat application as per directed. That's what my plan of actions to care for my indoor plants this winter. :-)
Cautions; this plant is toxic. Keep them as well as all chemicals away from young children.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Also, give them Bayer 2-in1 for their last feeding. It has a systemic insecticide that might kill them off and not let them return until you bring it in. Don't feed them with in just before you bring them in, however, very strong chemical smell.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Lily, these fly, LOL it was terrible. Last year, I overwintered under the house.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Sounds like the dreaded fungus gnats! They are hard to deal with!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Most of the brugs are in pots. Day Dreams and the white seedling are in the ground. The downside to planting in the ground is.....if you don't know what conditions the brug can handle, you are kind of stuck with it there because digging them up in the middle of the summer sets them back in most cases.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I break a mosquito dunk in quarters and toss a piece into the watering cans, let it sit for a while or keep the can full w/the dunk piece in there. Then water and refill, the particles usually stick to the side of my watering can and then next you water, it will have had time to soak. It doesn't kill the flyers but their larva in the potting medium. They're a botheration, and can harm the roots of your plants if the infestation is bad enough. I'm battling white flies at present and I'm going to have to find some cannons or something, I've tried everything.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

B;
Have you tried Malathions?

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Shirley,
I prefer the singles, also.
Especially those with exquisite flower forms.
But there are some great doubles out there, also!
Alice

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

AuntB.. I use Bayer's tree & Shrub the 12 month stuff.. that will rid you of whiteflies completely.. at least it does mine!

I also use peroxide & water for fungus gnats.. will cook em out of the soil and will knock em dead out of the air if you can spray em without getting too much on the leaves.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You have a lot of beautiful brugs, Alice. It's always fun waiting to see what your next one will be.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I've sprayed with Bayer something w/bio-neem 3 times - over the last 2-3 weeks, I added worm castings as a top dress in the pots, and almost nightly with H2O2 w/dish soap..... I threatened to get out the Raid. (just kidding) I'll look at the tree & shrub, but I was trying to stay more organic. The leaves suffered moderate hail damage and about 3 days later, the flies.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

The Bayer I'm talking about is a combo fertilizer and systemic insecticide.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Yep, thats what I used earlier in the summer, mixed in with the top layer on the pot, granules, right? I think mine is a blue jug, maybe Rose care systemic 3 in 1 or something.... should have dosed them with it again, after the hail, but I was trying to go organic.....I won't, not if they are going to suffer.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Yes, that's the stuff. I use it about once a month

Mc Call Creek, MS

Shirley, your pictures are wonderful! Thanks for sharing. That is the first look I've ever had of Rothkirch.

I've always heard it is hard to grow. What is your secret?

Kay

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Kay. I have no trouble growing Rothkirch. It sits in my cold garage all winter, leafless and dry. In the spring it takes off and I treat it just like all my other brugs. This one hasn't had the soil changed on it since I got it. It does get afternoon shade.

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

Ahhhh! One more look to hold me over until my bloom time comes. Pretty soon we'll be looking at all the Florida flushes too. It's kind of nice that there are different areas blooming at different times so the pictures can inspire us.

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

AuntB,
I also recently got white flies here. Tied alot of different stuff and nothing seemed to be working. Then someone told me that I should try Schultz Garden Safe Insecticidal Soap.
It really worked well on the whiteflies. You have to do it a few times about 5 days apart, but it has really knocked down their populations. The whiteflies were after all the dats, brugs, and philodendrums for some reason. Now the philos look like whole new plants lol, they were really bad before!

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Brugie, your pictures are amazing! I like the Rubirosa and freckled Rosalie the best :-)

karen

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I used Bayer insecticidal soap w/bio neem. If they aren't noticeably thinner tonight, I'm going to spray every 3 or 4 days till it freezes, IF I have to... it's so frustrating, I think they will affect the plant at this point, but I did put the systemic in so, hope they don't O-D from all the "meds". Freckled Rosalie, is very pretty and unique but I still like Day Dreams --- dreamy!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Karen. I'm glad you liked them.

I use Merit for Whiteflies. Never see them again after one drench. It is good for six weeks so it gets them all. My hibiscus are all in the basement now and will be getting a good drink of it soon. The brugs will get it when they go into the garage. It takes a few days, but then it's all over.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Still going strong. We have had some cool weather and the blosssoms are holding up nicely. No rain though.

Very pretty flush!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

That has to be hundreds of blossoms!!! It's wild! I'll dream of that brug tonite. And of course all of the above posted.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

thanks. Actually, it's about 60 blossoms. It's a one-year plant. I will have to start from scratch (cuttings) next spring.

Virginia Beach, VA

Wood spirit,
What variety is your brug? thank yopu, Bellie

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Yes, please tell us? I have never had one with that much yellow in the bloom. Mine are more washed out looking.
Teresa

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

they're actually orange. It's Solid Gold. I was hoping to buy a dark pink Mountain Magic cutting on eBay but it went for $31.50!!

North Augusta, SC(Zone 8a)

woodspirit, that is absolutely gorgeous! Should you have any extra cuttings of that one, please give me a holler :)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Beautiful picture, Woodspirit. Love those pictures where you can see into the blooms.
