Help with purple leaf sand cherry. It's infested.

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

I planted a purple leaf sand cherry this past spring and everything was
going great. I noticed some new branches and leaves and it looked
great! Then almost over night, there are brown spots on the leaves and
these slimy small black things on them. They look like very small
slugs but my mother in law (who is very good in the garden) said they
didn't look like slugs. Can someone please help me figure out what
these pests may be and how to get rid of them and bring my beautiful
plant back to life????

Any chance you can post a picture of the slimy black things?

Maybe sawfly larvae?

Note their colour can be influenced by the colour of the foliage they are eating, they might normally be green if they were eating a normal green leaf plant.

Best to do with them is squish 'em by hand. Wear disposable plastic gloves if you don't like touching them.

Another option is to hang a bird feeder close to the plant. Then birds waiting in the queue for the feeder will deal with them.
