Keniaki {Kenya}
Pretty! and you got the fly to sit perfectly still for the 2nd shot! Lol.
X
i trained the fly
Paul, did you use the short whip or the long whip? for training.lol.
allways the long
What's nice about both photos, you can see the fly's shadow.. you can tell so much from photos, like where the sun was at the time the photo was taken, just by looking at the shadows. Nice photos.
A.
Great photos, Paul! Aren't you glad you got a new camera....
LOL
Love this small yellow, very pretty.
Beth, I sent you one Keniaki seed, only one because they were very expensive...
Martin
Thanks, Martin!
Paul - I love the color of this one! Very, very nice!!! It's amazing how many interesting and beautiful plants come from Africa. Most people think it is all desert and barren, but obviously not!
Africa mostly desert and barren? Didn't you ever watch any Tarzan movies? The Discovery or National Geographic Channel? South Africa alone has about 10% of the known world plant species! One of my favorites is Protea neriifolia.

I first saw one of these flowers at Kew Gardens and my jaw dropped .. I though it made out of feathers! All of the Proteas are amazing. I have tried for years to successfully grow one, but to no avail.
X
Oooooooh! That's a really pretty and very unusual flower on the Protea! WOW!
guess ill have to try
I got my seeds from Fijnbosch Farms in Cape Town. Protea seed needs to be soaked in smoky water and they provide the smoke paper for this. They are easy to get started and you be all excited until they get about 6 inches tall then they keel over. I have tried many types of potting media including plain vermiculite. They apparently like a really high ph.
The King Protea is the easiest. If you can get a neriifolia to keep going long enough to bloom please tell me how you did it!

If you decide to order some .. check out the Leucadendron

and
Leucospermum

seeds too! They are amazing flowers as well.

Perhaps you overcared.
Proteas shouldn't been too difficult....I have seen a BBC report on somebody growing them quite successfully outdoors in England....
Martin
Paul, I'm going to be starting the seed you sent me in January. You said you had planted some of the shredded ones I sent you .. I guess no blooms yet since I haven't seen any pictures.
Martin .. I'm not the only one who has trouble with Protea in america .. I only know of one person who has been successful and they aren't sharing information. The culprit is thought to be a fungus.

X, That's why of all the exotic seeds I order, I don't waste my money on the lovely Proteas and perhaps the Banksia's. Can't remember if they're
in the same family. They can't take the humidity or that combined with our heat or
they can't take any water in the fall/winter season. I read early on how
difficult, next to impossible they are here. I had to just squelch my lust for these
beautiful plants. lol
