CLOSED: Can Anyone Tell Me What worm or larva or grub This Is

Elkhart, IN(Zone 5b)

Can anyone tell me what these are? At first I thought maybe they were grub, but these things have no heads or legs. I found them in a big hole in the trunk of my Hickory tree. The hole obviously has been there for a long time because it has healed. It's big enough a squirrel could sit in the hole. Any how I was bored and spraying out some sawdust from the hole with a hose and these gross worm like things started coming out with the water. I found over 20 before I stopped putting water in the tree. Their tails would stretch as they crawled. It looked like they had stingers in their tails, but I touched them and it wasn't sharp like I expected. They are about 1" to 1 1/2" Long not including their tail. When I picked them up and put them on my porch they would move their tail around like they were looking for something or perhaps they were exploring. They had no heads, eyes, or legs. If it helps I live in Northern Indiana and I just found these Monday. Thank you for your help!

SOLVED: Thank you all for your help. I had also sent pictures to the Entomology Dept. at a local college. They said the same thing that these were rat tail maggots. How ever they weren't sure why I found them inside my Hickory tree unless it was wet and rotting inside of the tree.

Most bizarre ! I have no clue what they could be, but am anxious to see/hear the responses this post gets !

Try calling your local Agricultural agency...they will probably know what they are.

Drone Fly Larva, Eristalis temax, (tenax? I see both spellings...) also known as a Rat-Tailed Maggot

That is totally disgusting. But fascinating...

Here's a link to its Bug Files page. Wallaby has added some info there, including how the tail is used for breathing.
Newbiegardener1, I hope you'll add your picture there too!
