hi. I have an indoor insect that I often see in the basement that I cannot identify. It is about an inch long, looks like centipede but does not have the legs, has a really hard body, and always curls into a ring when it dies. It crunches when you step on it. it is dark in color. I wish I knew how to add a pic here, I have a digital camera but do not know how to put it on this site. Thanks.

CLOSED: sorry no pic
Hi brainerd - try clicking on the 'browse' tab where you write your post. If you have pictures stored on your computer, they'll probably pop up and you just choose what picture by clicking on it.
There's a test forum, if you want to try it there. Wherever.

Eureka! Thanks claypa! I will go find my bug tonight and post a pic. you just made my life a little easier.

here it is claypa! I see when I enlarged it and put my glasses on that it does have what looks like lots of legs. I have always called it wireworm but I do believe this is not true. It shows up in my basement, it crawls like a pede straight ahead and being an inch long, but when I usually see them is when they are curled up into a circle. Hard shell to them. I went through the bug pics file a bit but did not see it. Any idea? Thanks again for the help!

Right, the wire worms are clickbeetle larva, this thing is a millipede. There's an extremely common, almost world-wide one called a greenhouse millipede or flat-backed millipede that's probably what you have. That species is called Oxidus gracilis. They are in the bottom of almost every potted plant I have outdoors. I just now liberated some...

Here's a page with some info and pictures:

These things are almost anywhere there's moisture and some kind of organic material. If you don't think that's your critter, search images of the family Paradoxosomatidae
Glad you got the picture posted!
Jeez Claypa, I think you hit it on the head. I perused the sites you listed and others till i got nautious from looking at those ugly critters, but I learned alot. I had no idea of the diversity of pedes. My invader does indeed like it near the drains, they apparantly die off quickly cause the ones I see are usually coiled up and dead, I rarely see them moving. I will mark this thread as solved, thanks to you. Really appeciate the help with all this. One thing I still don't understand is how to get the picture onto the front page of the forum, mine is blank there but shows up in the post itself.
Brainerd
brainerd, I can answer that for you, to get your pic on the front page you need to post it in your first post, and at that stage you didn't know how to do that but next time you will know. :-)
