Who are these noisy little buggers?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

We love them, but they certainly do make a lot of noise!

A failed pond project was left standing, and now rain water
has collected. Apparently a local frog moved in and then sent
word for the entire frog population to head over this way.

They are so loud at night, it is incredible. There must
be dozens of them all talking at once!

Could anyone point me in the direction of learning more about
these guys?

:-) Many thanks,
KM

How beautiful... I dont think we have any with spots !!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, my gosh, Charlotte, they are out in forces. I cannot get
over how loud they are at night.

They are all living in a water lettuce infested 16 x 4' pond which
just happens to be located next to the little window in our big bedroom.
Result? Three a.m. mating rituals for all to hear.

LOL

I think that is a Leopard frog. I think there are northern and southern Leopard frogs, but I don't know which we have in Oklahoma. I guess I'll have to listen close and see if they have a drawl LOL. If you find out for sure, let me know.

I don't know if it is this one making the noise or the tree frogs around my house.

I know tree frogs are noisey. I have a friend who likes tree frogs and gave her some tadpoles I found in the top of a water barrel.

I see these more at night. Here is one taking advantage of my feeder.

Yep on the leopard frog.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hi Deb,

Many thanks for your reply and for sharing pics, too!

We have quite a few frogs and toads around. The little
foamy colored light critters mainly hang out in the plants and
such. They are so adorable!

This one visited the window of the office every day for
about a week.

Here is another shot of one of the frogs living in the pond.
They make LOUD noises while the little tree frogs sound
more like loud sounds like tropical birds. LOL.

Az, many thanks on the i.d. agreement. Heading off to the
froggie files.

Egads!

Check this out from Wikipedia:

Leopard frogs, which are also called meadow frogs and grass frogs, are a collection of so-called true frog within the genus Rana. Once abundant in North America and Canada, their population has declined in recent years because of pollution and deforestation. Leopard frogs are often used as environmental indicator species because of their heightened sensitivity to chemical pollutants found in the air and water, and they are commonly used as dissection specimens in biology classrooms.

Shall I take this as a sign we are livin' good? LOL.
We don't care for chemicals around here, but of course, I guess that
would be obvious based on the jungle we live in, ha ha!

Claremore, OK

Oh, I really liked that last photo of yours. My husband does use some chemicals. I try not to. We should get together and swap stuff.

I think this is a tree frog in the water lettuce.

I don't know what this one is hiding in the lotus leaves. Azreno jump in if you know.

OMG I dunno what he is but he's adorable!

I agree with Deb, that last frog you posted is beautiful Wuvie.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

You know what is interesting about that last image, I
did not tweak the colors. I wish the focus were a bit
clearer, but he truly is that colorful.

I found him sitting in a pot of iris in the kiddie pond.
What a neat looking frog, indeed!

Love seeing everyone's frogs and toads. Very neat!

Okay, what is the name of the site and do they have pictures of the frogs and toads and recordings of their calls?

Here is a photo of the tree frog tadpoles I helped raise for a friend. They are eating Tetra koi food I got at Wal*Mart. I think I also put in some duckweed and azolla in their bowl. My friend finished raising them in one of her container water gardens. Once they got big her husband rigged some kind of escape ramp for them to get out of the container.

Hi Deb,

Nothing other than the information, so I posted it for all to see.
No pictures, nothing. :-(

I'd love to find one with calls and images.

This one has pics and frog calls...

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, Merry Mary, that is so neat!

Many thanks! :-)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

We have tons of them here! Although we know they are called Leopard frogs, we call them dart frogs. Those suckers move fast! We have some tire ruts in the field from years past and they fill with water. The frogs often hide in them. The kids and I have a good time trying to catch them and also trying NOT to mow them. LOL

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Ewww, now that would be a sight not to see! LOL

I'll bet the kids have a ball, that must be a lot of fun
at your place! :-) KM

Sarasota, FL

If you have koi in that pond you might want to salt bath them. Frogs carry fish lice...
Rick

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hello Rick,

Many thanks. The pond was actually an idea abandoned this summer,
so the frogs settled in.

:-)

Sarasota, FL

Ah, ok. so are you going to still have a koi pond or no?
Rick

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Well, with hubby and I both going back to work, it looks like
our koi pond is on hold for a while.

Sigh.

Sarasota, FL

wel when you finisnish it be sure to post pics . and maybe a few koi ;-)

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Hi Rick!

Checking back in two years later, ha ha!

Fish pics to come soon. Hubby did it up big. I mean BIG.

Wow this post is that old already? I was browsing and looking at the cutie little frogs (love that one on the water lilly leaf . . .too cute) and then I realize it is a thread started two years ago. I was going to ask what happened to the pond project at the end of the thread. I'm glad you were able to get it finished. Please post pictures!!!

Here is one of my Bull frogs. BEV

Okay, can you name this one?

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

All I know is our bull frogs and toads but guess it could be a real small bull frog. Sorry Bev

Deer Park, IL(Zone 5b)

I saw my first frog (I think it was a frog . . .) in the pond tonight. It startled me-a big bunch of bubbles came up from the bottom of the pond and then this little frog came swimming up to the surface and swam to the edge of the pond. it was a smallish frog. Nice confirmation of spring!

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

I have found two deceased frogs this week. It is very depressing!
I sure hope it is natural and not a chemical thing. My neighbors in back just had landscaping done and I hope a lot of chemicals were not used!! The fish are fine...just worried.. Love my frogs.

The very first frog to visit my pond. He was beautiful!

northwest, IL(Zone 5a)

We have leopard frogs here too. I think of their song as a song to start summer. Just like robins usher in spring. They live in the creek and sometimes hop thru the cattle pen ( brave or stupid) into my gardens or water garden container.

Deer Park, IL(Zone 5b)

Cheer-where do you live? I am northwest Illinois as well. I went bike riding today with the family and it was through a natural wetland and the frogs were having a party-I couldn't hear anything except the frogs in a few parts of the ride. There is a lot of water along and near this bike trail but only 3 parts had the frogs. My pond is only going into it's second season and I haven't experienced the noise yet. How long does the mating noise go on (tell me in days)?

northwest, IL(Zone 5a)

Mothermole, I'm over by the mississippi.
You saw and heard them already? Way cool! Not here yet, and I haven't sighted any although we saw striped fish in the creek.

They sing at sundown for what seems like the first half of summer. I don't remember an exact cut off as then the tree frog start up in my garden for a shrill sing-along. I like those little buggers even more!

Deer Park, IL(Zone 5b)

They are only in this forest preserve in the bog areas-not sure what kind of frog(Or toad) but it was noisy!!!!!

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Oh sigh....I Wish I had Leopard frogs here! I remember them from my childhood in Ohio...
