German Ipomoea Tricolor Mix Tricolor with picotee???

Aschaffenburg, Germany

I got a seed package from Germany with the following picture and the description says exciting tricolor mix. I could figure out that the picture was assembled on the computer...and it shows both ipo tricolor and nils. In the upper left hand corner this is a blue nil and the red one reminds me of a Scarlett O'Hara with a white throat. Looking at the seeds I find these are tricolor seeds, but then I compared different batches of tricolors and nils yesterday and can't still tell for sure what the difference exactly is except that the nils seeds are generally larger. I can take a photo of the seeds... If you look in the centre of the picture there seems to be a purple tricolor with a white edge...have you seen tricolors with a picotee edge before....?

No, I have never seen tricolors looking like this. I hate to say it but I have gotten really cynical about seed buying and if it is from a commercial grower I almost expect it to be mis-described or misidentified!

Martin, I have a pkg which shows the same flowers. Mine is old from 1998,
by Ferry Morse Seed Co. Shows Giant Mixed Colors and at the bottom,
Country Home Seeds. The back of the pkt reads Grown in the USA. I
couldn't get a good picture. It has a few light colored seeds which I will
try to grow out next yr.

I have started a batch, doubt that they can flower within th next two months, but since it's still warm and they a short-day flowers...we'll see what happens...

Martin - Your Eyes are getting good...there are I.tricolor buds and I.nil flowers in the photo...

I.tricolor seeds more often than not have a distinctive triangulated shape as shown here in the PlantFiles(always a good place to check)

I know I had previously posted this picture with the seeds...but can't find it now. Perhaps the server played up... So here it is again...somebody wrote it's mainly nils and purpureas and I definitely agree...I am sure Ron wrote about this...or was it in another thread? I think am getting too tired and stressed out with my translations these days...

Ron, please don't grow tired of having to repeat things...A good teacher has to do that all the time...and I have been tried and tested trying to teach Moroccans German...
Sometimes students have previously had some information, but haven't consolidated it...

Repeating things is what real teachers do! Thanks to Ron for so much of what I've learned. And to gofast, beth and others for asking questions many of us have.

I think the package looks like the Early Call mixture I've bought in the past from Wal Mart. I'm at work right now so I can't check.....

Interesting thread and posts from everyone. I have a whole new take on seeds from commercial growers now. Y'all are giving me quite an education! Thank you for all the info!!

I also have come to the conclusion that a picture and the contents of a package hardly ever match. Also, digitally produced photos are sometimes very different from the natural colours...At least, there is the surprise effect...however, if we have paid a lot for the seeds, it's small comfort to get something completely different...

Martin - The seeds in the photo you posted here

all look like Ipomoea purpurea to me...
