China Doll

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

China Doll is a new introduction to the USA Direct From China. She came with no name, so I thought China Doll would be very fitting for this Exquisitely Lovely Morning Glory. The Ruffled shape of the HUGE BLOOMS are different, from most Morning Glories and the colors are Whites and Pinks. Some of the Blooms of China Doll are almost a ‘SOLID Soft Pale Pink’, however, most Blooms are White with Pink Shibori-Type streaks . . . With No Two Blooms the Same.
Here are a few of many blooms from China Doll

One more of this beauty from this year

So you are putting bark on top of your soil to keep the weeds out...I was wondering if you have a problem with spider mite, too? If you are from Texas (with such a hot climate), then spider mite would have the same dramatic effect on your plants as it has on mine. I got a new spray from Germany, which seems very effective, as a matter of fact it's a bit like "surgery successful", but patient dead. I thought, this time I am gonna spray right away, when the young plants pop up, but I think they didn't like that a lot...

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

HI Martin,

Yes, we have spider mites and aphids. Spider mites not as bad this year as last. Last year they totally destroyed my leaves, stripping them to a skeleton. This year I started using Bayer Advanced Rose and Flower Care which is a systemic and also has a feed as well - and it is WONDERFUL!
All they need to do is take one 'chomp'.
http://www.bayeradvanced.com/productFamily/rose-and-flower-care.html

My foliage was so beautiful and lush until the rains stoped.
This year was my first battle with RUST as a result of all of the rain we had. Bayer has another product that works great for this. . .
It is:
Bayer Advanced 3-in-1 Insect, Disease, & Mite Conotrol
http://www.bayeradvanced.com/media/productlabel/701290B_label.pdf
It is the same as the first product I mentioned except it is a liquid concentrate and has the disease control added.

This time of year we have a horrible time with webworms and several other types of worms. Now we are spraying for the first time. Good or bad, it does kill anything that takes a bite out of the plant and also kills dead on the spot when spraying - except that it does not kill bees.
This is Perma-Guard - a Diatomaceous Earth Natural Products
http://www.perma-guard.com/
When you see a while film on my leaves in photos, you know we have sprayed.
The good thing about this product is that it only kills insects. It is NOT poison and causes no harm to humans or pets.

There is nothing more aggrivating than to go out to look at your beautiful Morning Glory Blooms and see a nice plump worm down in the throat just munching away - not to mention all of the leaves eaten away.

So, I am lucky I ONLY have mites...I am now trying Neem oil, which is a natural product from Germany. Unfortunately, I have killed some of my very young MGs because my mother sent me the can w/o user instructions, so I probably used too high a concentration. It seems to work on the adult plants...nothing else has worked so far...Spider mite is one of the worst pests because it builds up resistance within 2-3 generations...So I am sceptical when it comes to using chemical products. I read a report that said that as a result of using chemicalsl, the mites made up for losses by producing more eggs...

DDT had similar effects on mites apart from also being harmful to humans.

HI Martin,

Might worth giving the Bayer Advanced Rose and Flower Care a try. I have not problem with it on my very young MG seedlings.
Or, you could spray underneath the leaves every day with Joy liquid detergent.
The plain kind lemon scent with no degreaser.

Would you happen to have any more seeds for this one or any of your others? I sure would love to have some. If not do you know where I can buy some from? I would especially love to get some JMG seeds, I just discovered them this year and really love them.

Thanks, Sharon

Are China Doll seeds always dilute (light colored)?

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Beth,

Yes - or I should say they are 'supposed' to be.
However, this year I KNOW that one of the seeds I planted was a 'Light Tan' colored seed, and the Blooms were just 'killer gorgeous'. They had more of a LILAC color and not the Pink. When I started to collect the seeds they were 'Dark Brown'. The blooms on the entire vine were all 'Dark Brown'.

This is not the only MG that this has happened to me with this year. I even had a single pod of 'Blue Silk' give me 'Dark Seeds'.
And, there was one other that I can't think of at the moment.

I have wanted to ask Ron for his input on this, but haven't done that yet.

Did any of your pods produce 'Dark Seeds'?
If they did what did the blooms look like?

Emma

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I could swear I planted one of the light seeds, self pollinated all the blooms, and got all "brown" seeds from the pods. I'm trying to figure out why....

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

I did too Beth. Except that I didn't hand pollinate mine.
I'll post photos of it when I ever get my DVD replaced.
Jerry order the wrong thing

Emma - several possibilities as to the occurrence of a darker form flower and associated seed

it could be the result of a crossing

the other is that the plants do carry for a dark seeded form > but why now(?)

there are certain unclarified global environmental factors that act to trigger the changes

TTY,...

Ron

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

Mine aren't really black like the normal nils, they are just a light brown. I did hand pollinate and they were inside so no chance of an accidental crossing by the insects.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

This is what the blooms looked like.

This China Doll cultivar is superb! Really!!! I am enjoying all the photos everyone posted!!

Is this one of your cultivars, Emma?

I am wondering about the pesticide ...

Does anyone know if the nectar might be poisoned when using pesticides? I am concerned about killing any bees, butterflies, moths, or hummingbirds?

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I'm waiting on some seeds, I'll let you know the color as soon as I can...
