Depth to plant bulbs?

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

I posted this in the Beginner Forum, but I know you all have tons of experience with planting bulbs, so I wanted to ask you all too.

I have read varing things about how deep to plant bulbs, so can you all help me? I am going to be planting lilies (Oriental, Asiatic, Trumpet, and Tiger), tulips, daffodils, & hyacinths. Is there a general rule of thumb with how deep to plant them? I have read to plant them twice as deep as the bulb is wide. And I have a bulb planter that only digs max. 4" holes, which would lead me to believe the "plant 2 x the width of the bulb" is correct. I have also read to plant them 12-18" deep (which I think is ALOT). Can you all tell me the correct depth to plant these things, please?

Thanks,

Dana

Most bulbs should be planted at a depth of 2 - 3 times their height, though in your warmer zone you could get away with 2x. Getting busy this Fall? :)

Thank you! I have been reading conflicting info. and I just wanted to be sure before I plant and risk losing a lot of stuff, because of doing it incorrectly.

Yea, I have never been much of a gardener or whatever you want to call it, but this year I am starting strong; planting bulbs, flowers, and starting a vegetable and fruit garden. I figured since I quit smoking in June, I needed to pick up another habit-TEE!HEE! (Like I don't have anything else to do being a stay at home mom of 3, 6 years and under).

Anyway, thanks for your help!

Oooooh, then stick around here, we'll have you as hooked on lilies as you were on smoking. :) and it's way more better for you, and probably not nearly as expensive in the long run. :)

Do go check out http://www.buggycracy.com and see what goodies she has to offer, then in the sometime in December and January, check out http://farawayflowers.vstore.ca/ and that will help keep the winter blues away! :)

We will help you spend all that money you're saving by not smoking! We are a helpful bunch. :)

Good for you!! (I have yet to give up that habit) For all of you non-smokers out there, that means for the same price she could buy a lily bulb a day. Or any variety of things. For bulbs you could buy muscari on Monday, tulips on Tuesday...

Yep, stick with us and we'll have you a different kind of trouble in no time! :)

OH, WOW. I looked at the buggycrazy website and the lilies are awesome! I'll have to buy some from there at some point! I just bought alot of lily bulbs from Brecks and Bulbs Direct.

Diann & Moby-I have also joined a weight loss center, so a lot of the $ I am putting away from not smoking is going towards that, unfortunately. But, after February, which is the estimated date to have my weight off, I will get to use all of my money on the flowers and the garden----YEA!!!

Thanks for all of your responses!

Thanks Mags for putting in a working link to Buggy!!

Dana, you can think of gardening as your permanent weight loss activity! :)
