Birch tree in Long Beach

Long Beach, CA

Hi All,
I am new to the site and need advice on birch trees. Which variety stands the best chance here? We really want it to be multi-trunked (3), white barked, and a peeler. Does that limit us to Paper birch and if so will that make it here? We have wonderfully acid soil and it would be in an eastern corner of the yard.
Thanks in advance

I'm in Long Beach as well, and the multi-trunk Betula pendula varieties do very well here.

Just be aware though, that they DO have invasive root systems, so keep yours away from bldg. foundations and plumbing lines !

I don't know what area of Long Beach you're in, but some sections of this city have very hard compacted clay soil...which makes the invasive root system worse. IF you have such soil, dig a hole 3 or 4 times the size of the container the tree came in, and ammend it thoroughly so the roots go DOWN and not OUT as it grows.

If you want the tree to "weep" and keep it's natural form, DO NOT "top it"....I see more of these trees ruined by people who cut the tops off and destroy the weeping character of these beautiful trees !

P.S. Welcome to DG ! This is a fantastic site.

Thanks for the response! Regarding soil.. I am lucky to have fairly sandy acid soil. Lots of volunteer camelias, lillies etc. Also, the location I am thinking of will not create a root problem and I would never never top a tree :-D
