Happy Autumn the First!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

What a great day we have to begin a new season!!

I don't have a typical colorful tree to use here for this thread, so my one pretty rose will have to do.

Like Candyce I don't have a brilliant tree but I do have a brilliant Clematis that I took a snapshot of this morning for you folks!!!

That's a fantastic clematis!! I'm glad it's still blooming for you.
I have a question about clematis .... the leaves on mine seem a whole lot smaller than the leaves on yours. The blooms are still as large as they should be, so what is making the leaves so small?

Happy Autumn to all!! Love this season. From mid-Sep to early Nov., it's simply glorious. Great for 2 of my favorite pastimes - gardening (especially planting!) and hiking.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I love the hiking too, as long as the road isn't too steep.

(Zone 4a)

Here in Ontario we are known for our hiking trails....I too love hiking! I used to do it a lot more before the kids came along. Now would be a wonderful time to go though - the leaves are changing colour and the smell of fall is in the air.

Candyce I don't have an answer to your question - sorry.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Darn. I was hoping you would know, Dawn. I guess I'll go look at the Clematis Forum.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Candyce - different varieties have larger or smaller size leaves. If it's blooming well I wouldn't worry about it.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Have a nice trip in the fall! Har, har, har.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

This is the BEST weather! Now, if I can just figure out how to have a garden as colourful now as it was in July . . . .

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thought you did that thread already!!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Our Autumn here never happened last year, thanks to that horrific storm that dropped two feet of snow on our poor, "yet to change color " trees. I hope this year will be normal, because normal in Western New York is phenomenal....just like it is where you all live.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Victor is right about the different types of clematises and different leaves.

Harper was in a humorous mood, wasn't she?

Seandor - try a few trips to your favorite nurseries and see what's in bloom. Other local gardens can give you great ideas, too. Pumpkins, gourds, asters, mums, cabbages and kale make a lovely display.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Well, thanks, guys. I knew I could count on you. I'm glad that I shouldn't be overly worried about the leaves on my clematis plant. It blooms VERY well, so I am extrememly happy. I just hope it comes back next year for me. If so, I might find it a little brother or sister to keep it company while climbing the honeysuckle bush.

Happy autumn, won't be feeling much like it on Wednesday it's supposed to be 90 degrees!
I can't wait to wear long sleeves!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes that's too hot for now. Was pretty hot today.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I've been working in the shade again and forget how warm it is until I get back in the sun again. Now it's 75 - hope it doesn't get warmer than that.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I was in the sun and dying. The grass was so bad in my front bed that I literally had to dig up everything and separate out the good plants and re-plant them. What a back breaking job. An area about 7 x 8 or 9 took me about 3 1/2 hours.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Go to a nursery????? are you kidding???? I don't dare go near a nursery - I have to save my pennies to pay the lawyers still trying to get me permanent residency!

I did start from flowering cabbage (kale?) in July and I have planted those out - but now that part of the garden is mostly in shade . . . rats! Maybe I can get DH seriously drunk and get him to sign a document that says I can have a huge sun garden in the back yard. Only problem - DH doesn't drink very much :-)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Can the excess limbs of the trees be removed to allow for more sun. I just had that done last week. I'd prefer to have all gardens in light dappled shade.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

It sure doesn't feel like fall today. Looking forward for some rain then the weekend is supposed to be real crisp sunny fall weather again. Nice! :)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Autumnal greetings! What could be better than warm, sunny days and cool nights?? Celeste sent me some very cool daylilies that arrived today, so tomorrow morning I'll be out there starting a new daylily and white iris garden. I've already started preparing the area.....Thank goodness I am married to a guy that says "You can't have too many flowers"....Now I'm trying to convince him to pull out a whole big area of old juniper to relocate my veggie garden to a sunnier location for next summer. He says, "Put it on the list"... LOL

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

What a great guy you have!!

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

nap - I'm glad that here in "eastern" NY we don't have the weather you do in the "west"!! To crazy for me!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I always say 'You can never have too many plants'. My wife begs to differ.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Good thought for another thread, Victor: how many plants are "too many"?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That one might go on for a while.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

And then again, it might not.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Do you have any houseplants Victor?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Only one or two. Have to worry about the cat.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

First full moon of fall is the Harvest Moon. Digital cameras just don't do moon shots well.

Dpoitras, where is Mechanicville? Besides being East of me, I mean.

We are having rain, heavenly rain. This is good because we just transplanted some bushes from the front of the house to the side. We were at Majewski's Nursery and their trees and bushes are half price. We bought a good sized Rhododendron, about 3 ft tall and wide, for $20. I thought it was a mistake, but it wasn't! Looks very healthy too.

So we moved the existing bushes out to make way for it under the front window.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I can get you a good moon shot, Al!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Dude - dare!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Crack of dawn shot?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Full!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Please send some rain downstate, Nancy!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Nice moon pic, Al. It was deep orange here as it was rising. Durn! I didn't have my camera!

Vic, only one or two houseplants??? Then your wife has nothing to complain about, sheesh! You should've seen my place when I was up to 125 houseplants. It's just a 1000 sq. ft. house!

Hey, where's your moon Victor? We're all waiting!!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Somehow I think you'll be waiting quite awhile, Harper. I doubt if it was the full moon at night they were talking about.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

We have four housecats, so houseplants are always a problem!
