Glevely try to purchase Better Homes and Gardens "Garden Ideas and Outdoor Living" pg 102 is the picture you liked ) Fall 2007. I just purchased it, so it is still on the magazine racks at walmart. The whole magazine is full of fall ideas and getting ready for spring. pg 114 gives you a plant list. Start small like I did. I started around a tree. I measured about 24" away from the tree all the way around and me and my grandson stacked some pieces of broken concrete( left over from a breaking up a concrete walkway). I bought miracle gro garden soil, poured it all the way around to about 5" deep, maybe less. It took about 3 Large bags($8.00 a bag at home depot). Bought some little 3" and 4" pots as well as 6 pks. Then I was hooked. Everytime I go to the store, I buy one or two things to add to my garden(about once a week). It's easier to spend $10.00 extra than $300.00 all at one time. There is nothing like watching your little plants grow. From looking at the picture,(in BHG) it seems she stacked some rocks into the shape bed(s) she wanted, worked the soil or added soil, etc(the article gives directions) and also the plant names. I am sure I can't get it all at one time, but I am sure going to try. And I may only get one bed done, but one bed that looks like that will carry me thru the winter. If your whole back yard is dirt, start close to your house.see pg 114. you dont have to use those expensive log edgings. And that cypress mulch is super cheap. Start small and keep on going. A 3' x 3' space is a great start. Go to a nursery or HD or Lowes that is close to your house. Buy your plants, research them in the Plantfiles part of Daves Garden and your off to the races. And take lots of pictures so we can watch your progress.

drapelady, thanks for the website. I've ordered from Antique Emporium and Chamblee's and both sent me good, healthy plants. I wanted to send you a list of rose websites but I can't get the link thing to work. Help!

As far as fall color, my Stella D'oro daylilies have started up again since we're having this nice fall weather, and the cat's whiskers are going strong. The Mexican bush sage is blooming now and should last until frost. Everything else is over the hill, so to speak. But the roses are starting to have their fall bloom period.

You're a crazy LSU fan? You live in the right place! They sure did good Saturday.

Hi Peggy, yes I am an LSU Fan. But I cheer from my recliner, no way would I fight that crowd of people. Thankyou for the fall flower names. What are those tall beautiful purple things. I must have some. If you send me another post and just type in the website it will automatically hyperlink. Or at least thats how I did it. Your yard is so pretty. By the way, I should know this already but when do we normally get a frost in our area? Some years we wear shorts on Christmas day.

Port Vincent, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks sticks, yes that's my very first garden. Nothing fancy but I love every little plant in it.

Don't forget to check the different sites here for plants, many wonderful people offer their extras for the cost of postage. I have paid $8.95 for postage and gotten SEVERAL plants that I could have paid that much for EACH. DGer's send beautiful plants and are so helpful!!

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

Hmmm, frost - we usually get our first real cold weather the first or second week of Dec. and it seems like January we get our first frost. The big purple plant in the photo is salvia leucantha or Mexican bush sage. I've never looked for seeds but this year I will. I just root a cutting for a new plant. I overwintered some rooted cuttings for this year's plants. If you'd like some come by my house next time you're in town and I'll give you some.

Oh, and I love your under the tree garden. Outstanding edging.
And I guess you know you can leave those caladium bulbs right in the ground for next year.

Port Vincent, LA(Zone 8b)

psychw2 thanks so much for the info. So how does that work. I mean, do I just ask? I hate being a newbee and asking silly questions. I would love someone with too many plants to send me some for postage only. Thanks again..

budbloom when I am heading that way I will send you a Dmail for directions. I'd love to meet you and walk your pretty garden. Thanks so much for the offerand for the caladium tip.

Debbie,
There are a couple of ways of building your garden with help from other DGers. One way is decide what kind of plants you want and WATCH all the new threads in that category. For instance, if I want Daylilies, I will watch the new threads in that category. If one comes up that says something like "Daylilies for postage" or "Help for Newbies" or "Trade or postage for daylilies" then I would contact the person and say "I am new to DG and I am starting from scratch with a new garden. If you have some extra plants that you would like to share, I would love to have some. Can I send you postage or I have .... I could trade." I have been offered Oriental lilies, iris and daylilies this way. If you are willing to start your plants from SEEDS you will have NO PROBLEM building your garden quite rapidly. There is a current thread offering seeds to Newbies for SASE.

Or a different way to do it is to START your own thread. "Newbie wants your EXTRAS for POSTAGE". Then make a list of what you are looking for. The LESS specific (within reason!) you are, the easier it is to get some plants. What I mean is "would like some YELLOW day lilies would probably be more effective than listing a single cultivars name, be open to suggestions! Be sure to respond to ALL d-mails and postings, and ASK for feedback when appropriate. If you have a certain craft or skill, you might offer to trade for plants.

ESPECIALLY hang out in the plant trade forum! You are probably too late to pick up some of the thinning of the plants but you never know. I ran an ad in my free local classified ads offering to dig and thin perennials. I had the opportunity to dig up quite a bit!! You might consider planting from seed LOTS of one plant with the sole purpose of using it for trades. Open yourself a Pay pal account, it is free to set up and makes it EASY to send payment.

I hope this helps, I also have some sites listed on my computer that have what I think is some EXCELLENT bargains on plants. I make a word document and save information for later use. Best of luck to you! DG is a wonderful place to meet friends and expand your knowledge of plants.

Gosh Pat, again thankyou so much for all of this wonderful info. I will name one of my new plants after you. :)

This thread is now probably too long for our dial up friends, so I will start a new one.

drapelady, I've been out of town visiting family. I see you are meeting lots of helpful DG people, and I couldn't answer the country/ cottage question any better.

Hi gus, glad to have you back. She's a real beauty. You answered it perfect. I found a quote that pretty much says it all. "A garden should be an expression of an individuals soul, and if it looks good to that person, .... that is enough." And yes, I am meeting so many many nice people. This website is addicting. You ought to go to seed trading. Those folks never sleep.:) And I love the cleome. Pretty pretty. Gonna get some. Thanks.

Pat, Just wanted to say that was an excellent explanation above, that you gave to Debbie.
Warms my heart when I read people helping others, and sharing like they do here on Dave's. : )
Have a wonderful day. : )
