I am sitting here in absolute awe. I don't know why I haven't clicked on this forum before. These photos of your beautiful cottage homes and fences with the flowers and plants shown in actual applications have taken my breath. I am a newbee (started gardening in May 2007). I have searched and searched to find that look that will satisfy me. This is it. Absolutely fabulous . Please show me more white houses and picket fences and flowers and plants. I am drinking it in. Thankya'll so much for this forum
want2bee I love your home and flowers. You've made my decision for me. We are fixing to paint our house. White it is. With shutters, awinings, picket fences, and arbors.
stick_n_stones ohhhhhh!! beautiful
Repeat_Bloomer awesome
I still would love to see more photos. But at least now I know how and where to put the plants that I have already started.
Please show me more of your cottages and picket fences
I think we have a convert! Welcome!
You should take a quick look at the "Show me your gardens" theads - they're chock filled with pics that could make any gardeners mouth water. They look like they come out of those expensive coffee table books, lol.
Thanks Drapelady,
I had fun reading all the ideas the girls came up with...Really makes you start to see things a little differently...Can't wait till next spring, my wheels are already turnning!
I am new to this site also, but what fun and great people and ideas...
(Guess maybe we're all a little crazy)
Good Luck!!!
welcome welcome.....you soon will see alot of beauties here on daves garden; i am only 2 yrs old so don't feel so bad about being a newbie....we all start someplace and you are started!!!!
and i saw your fan flower/scaevola and knew we must be twins....it is a plant i will never be without...in fact i will show you photos of my baskets on my 'tuscan' patio....you can have more than one decor at your home:)
I thought that I would post a few pic's of my CG in its postnatal stages. This shot is from April of '06 just after we installed a tall picket fence and put in the beds. I'm very very sorry about the lighting. I hope that you can still see ... that there is hardly anything planted in there. lol
'They' say that it takes ten years to build a garden. I wish I could fast forward a few years!
gus very gorgeous
Sticks, thanks.
I'm thinking I might be country more than cottage but I have some of the elements, besides we don't have a country forum.
gus...i think cottage has evolved from country.....
Thankyou all so much. What a pleasure to get home after a long day and relax with your photos.
wrightie thankyou for the pictures of the beginning. I love the way you design with different pieces to create places for your flowers to grow. Great ideas for me to work on. Just beautiful. Do you have any recent photos of it. I bet it is awesome filled in. Nice to know that my birthplace state of Maryland grows such beauty and has such nice people
gardengus I love your garden. And no, I don't think it is country because country has a different look to me. Maybe it is your white fence,I'm not sure. But it is a beautiful cottage garden . What are those beauties in your third picture just before the Phlox? And the picture that is not your garden, is exactly what I want to put in one area of my yard. I love that look. I wish I knew the names of the plants.
Hi sticks :)
Ya'll keep em coming.
Hi Drapelady, I'm afraid that I've had a terrible year and I'm very displeased with my CG. Between the Groundhogs and MotherNature, I have very little color back there and hardly anything has filled in. I just want '08 to arrive so that I can start fresh. I want to widen the beds and re-design the whole thing. Next year will be a better year. *sigh*
Here is an "aerial" shot taken this afternoon. Note the groundhog trap by the back corner patio... lol
The flowers in my garden are cleome , they are annuals and grown from seed . they self sow here don't know if that would make them a weed there.
Most of the flowers in the other garden are shade plants. The low things hosta and coralbells (heuchera), there are hundreds of variety in them. The two small trees in the background look both to be jap.maples.
Hope to see photos of your gardens someday.
I too love looking at others gardens, inspiring, and better than a magazine, because you can ask questions.
Oh wrightie I love your deck. What an awesome spot to sit and enjoy your garden. Your yard looks great and "look out 2008". I see flowers and scrubs and all kinda things I would be thrilled to have in my yard. Thanks so much for the pictures
gardengus thankyou so much for the names. Now I can look up when to plant them, etc. And yes I will certainly post pictures as soon as it starts looking good.
I think I am even going to try to grow a rose garden like the one that the instructions were given in Daves Newletter. And I said "try" :) Wish me luck.
The people over in the rose forum are very helpful and I'm sure could tell you which roses grow best in your zone. What zone are you?
Just be careful looking at all the beautiful pictures, you will want them all.I now have a long "want list' and I don't even do well with roses.
Whoa, a little cross-posting there! I think both of you have wonderful gardens. I'm going to have to get some Cleome.... I thought I had some this last year, but it turned out to be Celosia, lol.
Wrightie, see, I think your yard is very well designed; even without the "color" it is still interesting and appealing.
Thank you, Schnookems. The cheque is in the male. (okay, mail).
Ugh, you're such a dingbat.
I speak not with forked tongue. There's no need for empty flattery - ask anyone on this forum.
*smooch*
Morning folks
Gardengus I'm zone 8b. OK. I have a question. Is cottage gardening a "look" or "certain types of flowers?
The reason I ask is, when I am on a forum and start a thread about seeing different cottage garden looks and it goes into different types of flowers is that cross posting? Just wanted to know.
I really do still want to see more pictures of CG and types of flowers you guys have planted in them.
wrightie :) :) Thanks
Drapelady, did you see my thread about the CG Society? There's an interesting quote, as well as a link, that you might want to take a gander at.

Thanks wrightie
Hi Drapelady, it's nice to see someone from my area on DG. Welcome! I live on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain across from New Orleans. In fact, my daughter lives in Baton Rouge. One thing I wanted to say is, when you're selecting plants for your garden, keep your eyes open for heat- and humidity-tolerant plants, like lantana, for instance. Things grow like crazy in the deep south and that's what's so wonderful about it. My I-guess-it's-a-cottage garden is stuffed with plants, partly because I like the look and partly because growth gets out of hand, lol. So I get down and look under the canopy of the plants, and it is a canopy - there's nothing under there but stems, no weeds, nothing. Because of the humidity. Our summers are longer and hotter, which I guess you know if you live here.
I'm new to growing roses and only have a few, so anything you find out about what roses to grow here, please share. I do know that About Face, a grandiflora I got last year from Chamblee, and Heritage, a David Austin rose, both bloomed all summer even though they were buried among other plants.
Cheers,
Peggy
Drapelady,
"cross posting" - can mean posting the same thread in different forums; I've also have seen the term used when two people were typing within a thread at the same time and missed each other's replies.
As for your other comment/question about Cottage Gardening, well, since CG involves planting so many different types of plants in the garden, you are bound to see "cottage gardeners" posting on a variety of different DG forums. Is that what you were asking or did I misunderstand?
Budbloom, I love that picture.
Thanks, Wrightie :o)
Peggy, You garden is very nice. I could hide away in there and be perfectly happy. : )
~Lucy
Good morning to you all
Hi wrightie Thanks so much for the CG link, it answered alot of my questions. Today is a beautiful day. I would love to be sitting on your deck, admiring your peaceful view. Thanks again so much
Hi budbloom, my neighbor, recognized the pine trees. We have about a gazillion tall pines, but I love em'. I am at the end of Walker South road so its about 30 minutes to where you are. Maybe a little more. I used to work one of my stores in covington and when I hit the interstate, it took about 20 minutes to Covington exit. Any way, it's great to have you so close. What grows for you will grow for me, I'm sure. And yes, I will let you know about the roses. I saw on the JP website that they have roses ready to ship now that will bloom this fall, so I'll get the website and post it to you. Are you enjoying our gourgeous weather or what? And gooooooooooo Tigers :)
drapelady...i think you are right at home here in the cg area:) nice pic:)
Hi sticks... Thanks so much. I too have been roaming around the forums, but this is where my heart is. I love the fan flowers too. They have been so good to this newbee. No matter what any of my other plants did, she just kept on beaming. Loves the sun and not too much water and she's fine. I love your garden pots. Did you say where you got them all? And I posted the picture of my yard so when I finish it, I can remember. I love your yard. That pic you posted of your backyard and your front is awesome. Also on May 28 2007 lincolnitess posted a pic of her sidewalk garden. Oh man. Also I found this picture in a magazine and I love it. So to sum up. I love to plant, but I haven't been able to get a design in my head. I feel like if I plant a garden like yours, lincolnitess, and my photo and add urns, pots, benchs, fences etc I sure I can still call it a cottage garden ,right? The magazine lists the flowers shown, so for me that is a relief. Now all I have to do is go see which ones are available in my area. I am so excited. The magazine said these are all fall plants, good to go til the frost. And in my area, that could be as late as January or February, if at all. Thankyou for your pics.
drapelady that is sooo beautiful I so wish I could do that in my back yard but have no idea where to start it looks very intimadateing (sp) I love it
Gloria
i think the quote that wrightie refered to about cottage gardening sumed it up:
"Cottage gardens reflect your own personal mix of plants ‑ whether flowers, fruit or vegetables. You don't have to live in a cottage, or in the country: cottage gardens are very effective as the small plots of modern houses, or the narrow gardens of older terraces. The emphasis is on the year‑round pleasure of enjoying their form, flowers and scent ‑ not to mention picking your own salads, herbs, fruit and vegetables. Why bother with the drudge of maintaining lawns and regimented borders ‑ especially with problems of climate change?
so do what you love....and keep doing it...it is YOUR definition; as for my pots and stuff ....same thing.....i see something i love and get it....i pretty much buy every thing on sale or at garage/estate sales.....; i am a firm believe in too much is not too much (grin).....; haha...i wish, i just walk a tightrope and hope that my eye catches me b4 i buy WAY too much....i am only in year 2 with my yard so barely an infant too.....prior to that i had never gardened....i hated getting my hands dirty...YUK; now it is a necessity to be in the yard as much as i can....
keep up the great work !!!
