CLOSED: Tried and tried to ID this wasp but didn't manage...

because I couldn't find one with this strong orange colour on the second part of its antennae and couldn't find a match for its face.

You're right about the faces looking different for some of them, but here are a few that look like your wasp, about half way down the page, Polistes dominulus:

Thank you so much Claypa!! That's the one, I'm sure now.
And I think mine is a male according to my insectbook that states that the faces of the males are entirely yellow.
