Newbie Question

Richmond Hill, GA

I planted one seed of Ipomoea Lacunosa - Lilac that grew into a beautiful vine with tiny flowers. My question is I now have many seed pods with ripe seeds but this vine grew near other MG's. OK here comes the dumb question, please experts don't roll your eyes at me. Since I grew them near 2 other MG's they could be cross pollinated and not bloom true to Lacunosa. Is this correct? Should I still save the seeds? Ok you now can all continue to roll your eyes but I have to learn somehow.
Happy gardening,

Hi cattjovi,

Welcome to the MG Forum! All it takes is one seed....! Generally speaking, unless your other two MG plants were also Ipomoea lacunosa, the likelihood of your seed being cross pollinated is very small. Ipomoea cordatotriloa has been known to make a naturally occuring hybrid with Ipomoea lacunosa, but if your other MGs were Ipomoea purpurea or Ipomoea nil, your seed should be just fine for next year's Ipomoea lacunosa crop.

Most of the readily available MG seed are varieties of either I. purpurea, I. nil, or I. tricolor so the odds of true seed are in your favor!

If you know the names of the other two MG plants, or have pictures, a more certain answer would be possible...

Hope this helps...

Arlan, Thanks for the information. Below is a picture of one of the morning glorys I potted. The other pot was the pink x purple blizzard cross seeds from gardner2005.
Thanks,
Arlene

Both of your companion plants are Ipomoea nil, so your I. lacunosa seed should be fine. I really have been enjoying all the blizzard cross grow out flowers. What a great project that is, and so generous of Gardner2005! I have seeds also that I plan to grow next year....

Good luck on your projects!
