I need information on shrubs and low-growing plants that can stand being underwater for two to three weeks per year. The soil is sandy loam with some rich topsoil mixed in. We need plants that can stand full sun as well as deep shade and that won't die (like the lavender I planted last year) if they are underwater for short spans. Our camellias do great but I'd like to use something besides camellias. Roses have done well along the river here but we're having a watering system installed that will keep our levee green and the wild grapes growing all summer. The blow-back of the spray could cause rust.
Any help would be appreciated!
Riparian zone shrubs our yard goes underwater!
Are they going to be underwater during the winter or during the summer? I'm thinking CA natives from a riparian habitat would probably work, but if they're going to be underwater in the summer months then that won't work as well. I also wouldn't worry too much about the water spray causing problems, out here in our low humidity climate the leaves typically dry fast enough that you won't end up with problems.
www.laspilitas.com is a great resource on CA natives--you can look up different plant communities and find out what plants will do well in your area.
I'd think marginal plants would work well. Society Garlic is a nice, evergreen marginal. Water Iris', Monkey Flower, rush, cattails, Lysamachia (sp?), Elephant Ears, Lizard's tail, etc.
How about Louisiana Iris?
