Fickle Tropical Gardeners Grow Fickle Tropical Plants!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

sticks, I can't offer much help as I don't do anything to mine. Much diff. than in your zone. Maybe you should go to one of the regional forums and ask what they do w/ their tropicals.

I didn't know skullcaps were tropicals. Earlier this spring I bought a white flowered one, only because the nursery owner, whom I trust, told me it was rare/unusual. I am not impressed by it. In fact, it is half dead, planted inground, full sun, which large tree limb protection.

well i asked on the ginger forum and i think i finally got the answer...and they said dormant
and they said to divide in spring that would be easier then....i have mine in a huge pot HUGE
i will photo to show you this giant...it is a non coveted ginger but i LOVE it:)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I covet all of them.

Skullcap ~ I've never seen a white... They have insignificant (read tiny) blooms. For some reason they charm me. Not sure they are tropical but there are a few that are not hardy. S. costaricana being one... tropical for me ~ I guess... 8 ) pod

Placenciarita ~ beautiful foliage and blooms ~ looks like a tropical jungle. I can almost hear the tropical birds... lol

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

okay here is my fav tropical....it is a monster that i got at home depot for 12.98; it should be divided...but i am waiting till spring i guess; its leaves are curled cause it is the hotest part of the day...but it is a beauty

sticks, is that a variegated ginger? I got a small one last year and put it in the ground....it died at the first frost but has come back. am told that it won't bloom because of that. Keeping yours in a pot and winter protected will probably work.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

yes it is .....; and i am going to bring it in....i can't lose this little pup....i love it so much:)

can't believe you lost your in zone 8?

We have lots of freezes in a winter. Sometimes a day or two of sleet/snow.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

wow....didn't know that...

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

Sticks that is a lovely plant. I don't blame you for babying it. I like the pot it's in too.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I had one of those once as a house plant. It lasted only a couple of months. I guess I should try it again and put it in the gh for the winter. Sticks does yours bloom? How tall does it get with blooms?

Podster, where did you find your gingers? I would like to find some that are winter hardy here.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Silver, you didn't ask me....but I'll give you where I got my two. The variegated like stick's is at HD most of the time. Last week they had some that were really large. I purchased the shampoo ginger from OnaLee's seed......she is in Go Gardening.

My Hedychium coronarium ~ butterfly ginger ~ came from a start at an old home place here in town.

I have another grocery store ginger root planted but with no blooms ~ just produces more roots.

Ever wonder why it is called "butterfly" ginger?

dancy that pot is one of those foam pots....i love them:)

silver do you have a hd in your area....this ginger is 3 feet wide and about 3 feet high....and was 12.98 at home depot....it is a flipping monster plant; it hasnt bloomed yet...but i am told that if you let it freeze it will root the next year....i am so not going to give it that chance i am going to bring it in...

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

My butterflyginger bloomed the second year I had it, but not since then and it is a mystery why. Beautiful picture Podster.:)

Sticks, we do have a Lowes and a HD in Kerrville, about 30 minutes away, but I rarely get over there. I do go to San Antonio pretty much every week, so maybe I could find one there.

Lou I will check out Onalee's Seed. Thanks.

Sticks I've seen those pots but haven't used one yet. Probably will next spring. I've got some hibiscus plants that will definitely need repotting next spring.

I have a several foam pots. One is holding up very well and 2 are loosing their paint. Well the one that looks good still might not be foam. It might be fiberglass. They are alot more expensive, but better.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

when the foam pots start loosing paint i just repaint them...it helps them deteriorate less....love them:)

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I thought about painting mine. What kind of paint do you use?

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

i have tried several...a sprayon ...or a paint with a paint brush...; if you have let it go too long with out paint (which i did) the paint will soak in so you will need more than normal.....; i just try to paint mine every year now and they last a long time:)

DH is thankful for the foam pots. He has to do the lifting and moving and with all the dirt and plants regular pots are almost impossible. We are not as young as we used to be.
The pots will probably outlast us both. *smile*
