We might have a moonflower open tomorrow night - has anyone taken any pics of theirs to share yet? I love 'em all - both photoshopped and in their natural setting.
Hope to see y'all share Ipomoea alba, as well as I. turbinata - does anyone know the names of other moonflower species? Or of any other MGs that persist into the night? PlantFiles has gorgeous entries, but it would be nice to see any what's blooming in your gardens this year.
Any moonflower anecdotes or lore would be welcome, too.
MGJapan, how do you say moonflower in Japanese? Fugao? Yugao? other? The woodcuts I've seen by the name of fugao are of night blooming gourds, like varieties of Lagenaria siceraria ( To those not familiar with this one, see http://www.japaneseprints-london.com/warriors_and_legends.htm - scroll almost halfway down to a print by Yoshitoshi of Yugao. Not everything on this site is family oriented.)

Moonflowers - any pics to share?
Karen - I am growing Moonflowers for the first time this year. I planted them along my back fence with Purple Hyacinth vine, Cardinal Climber (Ipomoea sloteri) and Spanish Flag. It is beautiful when in bloom! Large flowers and lightly scented. And it attracts the Hummingbird Moths which probably help pollinate each bloom. I love this vine!!!!
Well, there is one that here, I. macrorhiza that blooms at night, and it has buds, when it blooms I'll try to capture a photo.. and post it. I dont' know if it is considered a moonvine though.
That is truly a "picture-perfect" moonflower image you've got there, Becky. Let's hope the camera police don't come nab me for the fuzzy one I'm posting here. But, I like it for including the night and leaves nearby lurking in the dark.
Could you take a longer, wider shot of that brew of vines you've included with your moonflower vines? How about 2 shots - one day, one night. As many as you like. As far as I'm concerned, if you've seen one moonflower, you have certainly Not seen them all. The night has moods, too, you know.
Gourd's Dracul will approve.
Thanks Gourd - we crossed while my pic was loading. If I'm wrong, someone correct me, but I though any member of the morning glory group was considered a moonflower. So, I. macrorhiza will be most welcome.
Daddy Drac makes a great shadow lurker - where's Junior? With monikers like those, they certainly fit in here.
Do I see a similarity to the Kikyou type of MG with that flower shape and leaves that look suspiciously yellowy and crunchy like those with the whirlpool gene?
Heavenly, Lucy.
Thank you Becky & Lucy for my moonflower fix tonight, and to Gourd for the appropriate companion. I'll be able to nod off into bowers of moonflowers.
