I bet they're sawfly larvae of some kind - what plant's leaves are they on?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Vi is that a Catalpa tree leaf they are on?? Tried to call your cell lol.
They are some kind of Sphinx moth for sure but need to know what they are eating as I don't see them in my book

Could it be some kind of sphinx mimic? I think the sphinxes lay eggs singly.

Ceratomia catalpae Catalpa Sphinx larvae
It definitely helps to know what they're eating!

I think DonnaB has got it right, I found a pic which matches. Look at pic 5 under the Description of Life Stages.

If you know anybody who fishes for catfish, they'd be pretty happy with some larger ones of these - one site says they go for ten bucks a dozen!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Their spots make them look like "dalmations" cats. :-) Very interesting.

Yea that is what they are Catalpa Sphinx, they are on my Southern Catalpa tree eating the leaves like crazy.

Thanks everyone and Janet for the pictures. Didn't hear my cell Donna I was in the Hard Rock losing my money.

Now what do I do about them?

Vi, if your tree loses it's leaves over winter and I think Catalpa does, you could just let them have the leaves and enjoy watching them develop. If they are hatching late in the season they should never bother the tree enough to worry about. It shouldn't be long before the leaves drop anyway.

Vi bring them to me this week end and you can pick up your Hibiscus if you are ready. They can eat my tree. I was told it was a Catalpa tree and not a Black Gum I planted. It is big enough for them. We used to fish with them when I was a kids

I am going to do just like Janet said and leave them there and let them eat, I will lose the leaves in the winter anyway.

Donna I have enough leaves there to feed them. First chance I get I will call you about the hibiscus.

sounds great Vi
