a Carpenter bee, but have got a message that the Order Hymenoptera and Family Xylocopidae are unknown and to ask here. The bee I am trying to add is Xylocopida violacea, a wonderful large violet bee. Have I got the naming wrong?
trying to add...
The carpenter bees are variously placed in the Apidae, Xylocophidae or Anthophoridae.
We have elected to stick to the Apidae for these bees.
You appear to have the name of your carpenter bee mispelled. I think it should be Xylocopa violacea, not Xylocopida violacea.
We have two species of Xylocopa in bug files, but not yet Xylocopa violacea: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bbugorder%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=Xylocopida&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&Search=Search&searcher[genus]=Xylocopa

Thanks. Mispelt the name here getting very confused LOL. I'll go an add it now and should soon be able to add photos too - it's a very handsome beast :o))
Thanks for the link
Still can't add it:
"The order ("Hymenoptera") and family ("Xylocophidae") are not familiar to us. Before you can add this bug, you'll need to post the details to the BugFiles How-to's forum."
The other Xylocopa have no order or family shown, but when I try to add Xylocopa violacea in this way, the BF will not accept it, answering with the above message with blanks in the brackets..........................?
Please enter the family as Apidae, not Xylocophidae. Then it will be accepted,
Ken
Brilliant, thanks :)
Yippee it worked - and I have left my thoughts on this lovely bee :)
Will work on a photo.
