Stargazer Ills

South Orange, NJ

Hi. This is my first post. So if I'm getting it wrong let me know. Thanks.

Well, I bought a bunch 6 or 7 Stargazer bulbs probably at Home Depot.

Planted them. They came up last year. Remember I thought them a bit small. Read some more, maybe right here, learned that they grow taller with age.

This year I was all excited as they were going great guns. They were taller. They had buds. Then....the buds just started going all brown and dying mostly before they opened. A couple did open but there were all distorted and didn't open really well.

Whaaaaa...

Here are some picts.

Can anyone help me diagnose what they problem(s) could be? And what cures might be?

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Thank you for you time.

I can't believe how much I've learned from DG without ever posting.

Sorry you haven't gotten an answer yet. Do you have any evidence of thrips? They can cause a lot of havoc with buds / blooms.

Hi. Thank you for your reply. What do thrips look like? I haven't seen any bugs tho I've looked.

Can't say I've ever seen one but I have seen the damage they cause. http://www.isn.net/~noakes/pests_photo.html I understand they can cause blooms to abort on many flowers.

Hopefully others will chime in with their thoughts.

Here is another site you might want to check out. I found it VERY informative.

That's the most comprehensive info on thrips that I've ever seen!

WoW!
That daylily pict looks a lot like my poor stargazers. Cut off at the stalk.
I've got to look more carefully for thrips.
Thank you so much for all the information!
I'm new to gardening. And it gets baffling pretty quickly.
I really appreciate you time and knowledge and kindness.
