BWilliams...How was it?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

So, how was the IAS show (and SALE) ..... see anything odd? Interesting? Outrageous? Timfoss445 and I were discussing it might be fun to get a group of DG'ers to go next year... Rox? Tropicman? 2pugs? Anyone? Southwest usually has reasonable airfare, I'm planning on going, I've wanted to for the past 2 years, and just seems to sneak up on me (or I'm on some internet plant buying frenzy and can't spring for the cost) lol. We could try to hook up the day before, maybe. Tour a garden or nursery, or dinner, drinks and intros? I just thought it would be fun. Anyway, Brian, I know you are a busy man, but we look forward to hearing about your adventure when you have a few minutes.-Bonnie

Athens, OH

I would definitely love to go if I could meet up with guys.

If you fly down you can't bring anything home.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Okay, anybody have a van? A semi tractor, covered trailer? We might have to make a week of it! I considered that Linda... I 'm not one to go off galavanting across the nation without a plan, girlfriend! Flying would keep me from buying anything too big! We can go to Fed Ex or a Mailboxes, etc..and you'd be surprised what we could pack in an extra suitcase, just bring a carry on with clothes and toiletries and check two bags with packing in them to bring our treasures home in! (although after just listing my plant inventory to Rox on another thread, I really shouldn't even consider the trip) BUT, I have been considering for 2 years, so 2008, is my IASSS trip and I can move on to other gardening themed trips!

Athens, OH

Hah!
I bring plants home on the plane all the time. Just got to sacrifice some of the foliage.
And yes when I went to Hawaii last year I FEDEXed home 2 boxes of EE for me and 1 for BWilliams.
I'm even learning how to deal with Customs and Dept. Ag.. Of course it helps that Ohio Ag doesn't worry about shipment of EE since they are non-hardy here {Don't anyone tell them about Pink China or Black Pearl!}.

ROX

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Black Pearl, hardy too!!!?? I have one in the ground now, maybe I should try leaving it. With lots of mulch and a bag of leaves? What's your zone, Rox? (5, I hope) Hawaii! How nice! I wouldn't come back (till funds ran out, which probably wouldn't be very long)! Just leave me out there with the hibiscus and plumeria and black sand beaches! Okay, so there's 3 of us, thus far. Oh, it's going to be fun! Linda, we're bring plants home, hon. AND you are 1 of the 3 of us... right? I'm coming to the Wichita Flower show next spring, they'll have a new plant I won't be able to resist, or a deal on a pot or something... maybe we could even meet then? Oh, I was meaning to ask you, they are having the Nat'l Flatpicking Championship in Winfield this week end aren't they? I went in 1978, (okay I'm 52, no biggie) and my youngest DD's boyfriend went, I think it was this weekend....

Athens, OH

I am zone 6a (barely). I think BWilliams said Black Pearl was showing similar hardiness to Pink China.

ROX

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

I'd love to go next year too! You can bring plants on the airplane, as far as I know. I brought lots back to Baltimore from Orlando last year! I just packed them in a large paper bag with carry handles. AirTran didn't seem to mind at all!

Athens, OH

The only states I know where this is a "no-no" are FL, AZ, HI, and CA.

ROX

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Great! Grow Happy... How large a bag......? lol I just know if there's a will, I'll FIND a way! We could fly down and rent a one way u-haul truck.. Actually, I think Brian has done that before! But NONE of us are buying a TRUCK load of plants..... are we? Sure some of us together could, but I should we..? I'm whining now I have too much stuff (time to bring it in, happens every year)... I'm just buying 3 new things at the IAS next year ;) people, I've GOT to put a governor on myself, they are going to start calling me the CRAZY plant lady! We'll be fine with our luggage and brown paper bags with carry handles..., right? With all the recent stuff with Southwest, maybe we should check out AirTran and other fares, too. I think my boss will spring for southwest if he's got frequent flier credit... I'm just going to find out the legal rules before, so I know I don't have to miss a flight or (gulp) leave em sitting there, abandoned, and cryin' for their new momma at the security gate.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

You are so funny AuntB, LOL! It was a very large bag, by the way. I just placed it on the floor space in front of me. No problems at all. I was praying from the moment I walked through the airport doors until I got on that plane! LOL, Oh yes, I did wrap all of them up in newspaper. But, the security guard could CLEARLY see what they were with the xray thingie. LOL

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh, great Rox, and Grow Happy!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

AuntB the Blue Grass Festival was this past week-end. I have only been once. Many a many year ago. I don't care for that kind of music. Now my hubby he loves it, but we both think it is a little high priced.

Dallas, TX

AuntB, A governer on buying plants at the IAS show? The last time i was there i bought nine EE'S before i got through the entrance. Inside was a room full of out of this world AROIDS. I brought back two large suitcases full of plants on American Airlines. Could not go this year ,but i will be there next year! Jerry

Dallas, TX

PLACENCIARITA, Lets plan a trip to the IAS show=sale in '08. jerry

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

YAY! The more of us the merrier! We might just have to rent a party room for a pep rally and to find a support person when we have to "just say NO and walk away" Maybe we can reserve a block of hotel rooms at a special DG rate, of course! Oh, I have lots of ee's, I'm going mainly to SEE the out of this world aroids ;) and hook up with my DG buddies here on the aroid forum! 9 BEFORE the entrance??? Tsk, Tsk, Tsk.... Really, Jerry, you JUST have to practice a little self discipline, goodness! So whadya get inside?

Athens, OH

My idea of personal support is "just say yes and can I can the first pup?"

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I like your way of thinking rox_male

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Kind of seems a bit sly.. maybe, Rox.........but I see what you mean......hmmmm.... I should re-evaluate and set a more attainable goal...something a little more realistic.....maybe a monetary allotment? If I can get my boss to flip for the airfare, I can see what tickets are selling for the day before I leave (should cost more then;) and THAT is how much I can spend... because I HAVE saved that by using my boss'es frequent flyer miles...... It's not how MANY plants ... it's how much I can spend! Phew! I feel better. This is going to be great!

Athens, OH

Just an ignorant question...
When and where [IAS show]?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Here's a link, Rox.
http://www.aroid.org/show/showinfo_2007.html

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

Aunt B, we are all enablers here. The support person you speak of may not be a happy camper in the midst of all of "us". LOL

I'd really love to go to see the plants, but moreso to buy plants. Especially Philos, Syngoniums and Anthuriums. Yum!!!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

BTW is Brian even back yet?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

He's probably unloading the u-haul right now, Linda.. lol Here is a link he posted last year about his adventure... Hope you don't mind, Brian!
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/647979/

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Yes I read it last year. You see there are things there that I would not be able to fit in a sack with handles or in a suitcase. It would cost an arm and a leg to ship some of the neat plants. And my will power will let's say, I don't have any will power when it comes to plants.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I thought I had willpower, but with all the enablers around here..... I'm up to the brown bag with handles and 1 suitcase..... maybe you and DH could take a road trip? If I drove down, I would want to take more than a week off work, and if we are busy here, I don't feel like I should take 2 weeks at once... Yahoo said it's almost 24 hour drive from Wichita.... so the trip could be done in a week, but that doesn't leave any time to explore along the way... four 12 hour days of driving (I could do it, but I'd be cranky at the end of the day lol) and 3 days to rest and see the show and a couple other points of interest....

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I like the idea of flying down, and renting a van to come home in.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

That sounds like a great idea! What kind of plants do you have on your mind? I'm sure we'll SEE ;) a variegated variety amorphophallus, kind of like the bulb I will be sending you, soon... only mine aren't variegated :( philos? EE's? or just anything you desire??

Louisville, KY

Thanks for the personal post. I had an amazing time at the aroid show this year as I do every year. It is one if not the only few places I am usually able to find new aroids and other plants to add to the collection. Over the years I have been getting more and more picky about what to buy. The first few years I was a mad man and bought everything I could. The aroid society is a great society to join it is well worth joining just for the newsletters and Aroideana book they send out each year. So if your interested in or serious about aroids you should join.

As for my trip. It is usually a simple plan drive down to the aroid show hitting ever possible collector or nursery on the way and bring back as many new and unusual plants as possible. In years past I was taking huge truck loads back but this year I was able to squeeze everything in the back of a explorer. My mother was with me she recently retired and was able to join me on the trip. I left at 8:00 on the 9th and drove from Louisville to Tampa a 14 hour drive. The next day I got up and went to Tropiflora were I found a few plants I was interested in. I have grown a taste in odd epiphytic cactus and they have a nice selection of forms I did not have. After the visit there I went to Selby Botanical gardens were I was able to get a lot of nice photos and was allowed in the back collection to take more photos of some really amazing plants rarely seen. The next two days I spent at sanibel island. My mother had not seen the ocean in many years and we got to relax and collect sea shells. After that I was able to go to Miami and visit Enid from Natural Selections a great friend of mine as well as Palm Hammock Which is one of my favorite nurseries to visit. Unfortunatly Tim the owner and friend of mine was out of town so I have to pick from the regular stock plants LOL. The next day I was able to visit Silver Krome nursery owned by Dennis and Bill both amazing growers and good friends unfortunatly my camera batteries went low and I was unable to take as many photos as I would have liked at their amazing place. The rest of the days were spent at the show I had a good time catching up with friends and talking to Leland from Hawaii a appretice to Roberto Burle Marx who has been growing some very interesting aroids. Ron Koffman was their who sells plants for Ecuagenera so I was able to get some new philos and Anthuriums that were collected out of Ecuador. Their were many others their I am sure I left out but everyone their is very friendly and all of them are plantacholics which we all can relate to. After the show I went south and visited LariAnn Gardner's place Aroidia research. Their I was introduced to tons of plants we probably wont be able to see for sometime on the market. She deals with new Alocasia hybrids Philodendron hybrids and Anthurium hybrids and has created some plants most of us grow like Alocasia portora , Alocasia Caliodra. Their I was able to see Sarian crossed with Borneo Giants and many many very odd creations. After that I drove back up to Orlando and stayed the night. The next morning I visited Randy Strode and Ty Strode from Agri starts and got a personal tour of the tissue culture labs and the greenhouses. Many plants we grow are from this place and they had many odd balls pulled out. Even just walking around the place I saw tons of variegated bananas and Alocasias they pulled out and many they over looked. It was very interesting and I learned alot. I figure like me your wanting the photos so I will post a few but of some of the things I saw and got.

bwilliams! You post em when you can. We're dieing to see them, but we ARE patient plant people;) Thank You for such an interesting post of your adventure! How nice for your mom and for you to have some time together! Now she can play in her back yard full time! Just an explorer full? No boxes being shipped up? I'm SURE you acquired some VERY unique specimens. ...........okay, the pic above... I need 2.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi All,

Just to introduce myself (new Dave's Garden member); I'm LariAnn Garner, of Aroidia Research. Brian Williams (bwilliams) just visited this past Sunday and it was a pleasure meeting him and showing him the future of Alocasias. I'm hoping next year to be able to have some kind of show where I can let people see what kinds of plants I've come up with, as well as showing what I hope will become the largest Alocasia robusta in the continental United States (ask bwilliams how well I'm doing there!). You are all welcome to visit my site http://aroidiaresearch.org and get a look at what I'm up to.

I look forward to sharing what I can with you all.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

LariAnn, WELCOME to DG! It's a pleasure to meet you... I think I crossed paths with you on a dif gardening forum a couple years ago... SO glad you decided to join DG! I was really excited to see your name in Brian's post! I'm interested to see what you are doing down there. (He throws us tidbits and then makes us wait.....it's called baiting the hook! lol) Your knowledge will be an advantage to us all interested in these wonderful plants! I will visit the website and would love to visit in person and see your show...... Do you need a PR person?? lol Can't wait to SEE the largest robusta! Be sure to check out all of Dave's Garden... lots of good stuff! Welcome again -Bonnie

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks, Bonnie!

It looks to me like I'm going to have a lot of fun here. I'll bait the hook a little myself and let you know I have seedlings of a cross between A. odora and A. reginula, A. odora and A. advincula (batwing alocasia), and a host of others that Brian got to see when he came over. That's why I need to do a show next year, because I have so much new material in seedling stages that next year will be full grown (did I mention A. odora x A. robusta? I have them too. . .)

Luv, LariAnn

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

OMG more EE's I will have to have. I can't wait.

Welcom LariAnn I will check out your web site. I know I won't be able to go to a show of yours, so please post anything and everything you have or would like to share.
I love the huge mighty large EE's. They are fun to grow, whenever people come to my house they can't beleive the EE's that I have. So please do keep them coming. Between you and Brian we have a lot to look forward to.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

If you love the huge mighty large EEs, then you'll love what I have coming down the pipeline. From huge to colossal, the Imperial Giant (Borneo Giant x VangiGo), the Borneo Mac (Borneo Giant x Big Mac) (available now!), the Sinuate Mac (Big Mac x Sinuata), the Borneo Tsunami (Borneo Giant x Portei), and next year, the Robudora (Odora x Robusta).

If all goes well, I'll be shooting for the Borneo Giant x Robusta, which should be the last word in supergiant Alocasias.

Hope you have a large yard!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

We can move, LariAnn.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I live on 18 acres, but I only plant around the house which is a lot of space. Do you see all the land behind the light pole, then there is more to the right and left. I haven't started planting there yet. All I would have to do is buy some more garden hose.

Hi, LariAnn, and welcome! I've bought from you before - cool website!!!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Yep, she's gonna need the u-haul to get it all home after the trip to FL next fall!

9B, FL

Welcome LariAnn,

Hopefully, I get to meet you next year at the show. I was going to have Eric introduce us, but could not unglue myself from the table with the Ecuador Aroids. I was hoping you would be at the dinner since I missed you.

Anyway, I always enjoy your site. I love large Aroids, so cannot wait to see what you come up with and will definitely come to your showing.

Martina
