CLOSED: This caterpillar is eating my tomatoes!

San Francisco, CA

Hi there,
Can anyone tell me what type of caterpillar this is? It is varaciously eating my tomatoes (it likes the green ones). There were two of these caterpillars on my plants but I relocated one of them in my neighbors yard. It is pretty cool looking so I left one out there on the plant. Thanks for any info you can give me!!

Sir, that's the Tobacco Hornworm, Manduca sexta, who will become the beautiful Carolina Sphinx Moth.

It's so nice to hear someone willing to share with these beauties!

Yours looks pretty good. Mine met a pretty ugly fate:

It looks like a tomato hornworm. They will eat the entire tomaot plant in just a day or two.
